IDOC Fugitive Apprehension Unit Locates ‘Walk-Away Offender’

An Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) offender who walked away from custody Wednesday afternoon was captured shortly after midnight.

According to authorities, 39-year-old Travis Hornett, who originally hales from Waterloo, was tracked down to a vacant home he forcibly entered as a part of his effort to evade capture.

Hornett was confronted in the Beverly Shores home by members of the IDOC Fugitive Apprehension Unit, along with members of the Indiana State Police and other local law enforcement officers.

He reportedly surrendered without further resistance. Neither Hornett nor any officers were injured as the result of his recapture.

As a result of his escape from lawful custody, Hornett is expected to face the Level 5 Felony charge of escape as well as the Level 6 Felony charge of residential entry.

IDOC Commissioner Rob Carter commented that officials greatly appreciate the effort and assistance provided by ISP and local agencies who worked side-by-side with the Fugitive Apprehension Unit to get offender Hornett back into custody.

When he was captured, Hornett was in possession of a backpack that he acquired by unknown means while he was fleeing. Police believe he may have obtained the backpack from one of the local beaches in the area.
