Knox City Council Considers SC Comprehensive Airport Zoning Ordinance

At the recommendation of the Knox Planning Commission, City Council members recently reviewed the Starke County Comprehensive Airport Zoning Ordinance.

Councilman Don Kring, who also serves on the Planning Commission, explained that this ordinance was created in response to the local airport being awarded a grant for a runway extension.

The Federal Aviation Administration reportedly provided the Starke County Airport with $600,000 grant.

Kring noted that officials like to see that the communities where these funds are being invested have specific rules in place to ensure that heights of surrounding structures will not interfere with flight patterns.

He said some of the local places that would be included in the specified zone would be portions of Parkview and the Industrial Park area.

Council President and Plan Commission Member Ron Parker added that no current structures would be impacted by this ordinance so it is mainly relevant for future development.

Since the ordinance consists of several sections and has multiple pages. It was only considered on first reading when members met Tuesday night. Mayor Estok recommended that council members take time to review it thoroughly before their next meeting on Tuesday, September 24th.
