Culver Town Council Considers Police Department Purchases

The Culver Town Council members considered several purchase requests from Police Chief Wayne Bean last week.

To help cut down on speeding complaints, Bean asked to purchase a portable speed alert monitor.

“I think it’s an asset especially from Spring to Fall with all of the people that come into town.  It’s a reminder of the speed limit.  It’s a big safety thing of course,” said Bean.

Bean said the apparatus will flash lights when the driver is exceeding the speed limit with the posted speed visible to the driver.

“We’ll be waiting down the street for you,” joked Bean.

The council members unanimously approved the cost of the portable speed alert monitor at the discounted rate of $6,892.

Bean also asked to purchase body armor for the five officers on the force at a cost of $4,080 which was approved.  The money will be encumbered from this year’s budget to pay the invoice that is expected after Jan 1.  In the meantime, company officials will fit the officers for their vests.

In his final request, Bean asked if the council would approve payment of 20 days of holiday and vacation time off for officers who could not take the time off during the year.  This is an annual request as the police department is short-staffed and not all time off can be taken.  The council approved the payment with a unanimous vote.
