The Pulaski County Drug Free Council will be able to give out more grant funding this year than previously thought. Drug Free Council Member Sandy Lucas told the county council Monday that the group had budgeted $8,000 for the year. But she said according to the auditor, the fund has actually collected almost $13,500 in substance offense fees over the past year.
“We never know what it’s going to be, depending on what’s paid,” Lucas explained. The Drug Free Council wants the county council’s permission to spend the full amount.
Lucas said grant applications can be for any education, prevention, or treatment-related efforts. “Typically, we get one every year from West Central for after-prom and Winamac for after-prom,” she said. “So far, I’ve gotten one from West Central. I know Winamac’s working on theirs. Four County has asked in the past. But it doesn’t have to be an organization. It could just be an individual. We have a grant committee, and we all get together and read the grants.”
The county council agreed to advertise the $5,500 additional appropriation request for future consideration.
