INDOT Discussing Improvements at Starke County Intersection

Officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation are looking at improving the intersection at U.S. 30 and State Road 23 in Starke County.

Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the county commissioners this week that he and County Attorney Marty Lucas recently met with those officials who outlined an engineering assessment.

“They’re going to do an improvement at that intersection, but they haven’t made a decision yet,” stated Ritzler.  “They just wanted to let us know the alternatives that they were looking at.”

Ritzler noted that they’re focused on safety.

“The number of accidents is about average for that type of intersection, but it’s in the 92nd percentile for injuries for that type of intersection which is bad.  There have been 19 accidents in the last three years and I think 16 of them had injuries.  I’m not sure of those numbers but it’s close to that.  That’s bad.”

Ultimately, officials want to reduce the number of injury accidents and increase mobility in that area.

One option may include J-turns, but no decisions have been finalized.
