Knox Residents to Determine Location of Gym Floor Display

The Knox City Council members are leaving it up to the residents of Knox to determine where a piece of the Knox Weinberg Gym floor should be displayed.

The City of Knox was the winning bidder on a piece of the historic Weinberg Gym floor as crews dismantled the flooring to make way for a new surface to be installed by the end of the school year.

The floor was installed in 1956 and was unable to be sanded down any further without destroying the integrity of the playing surface.  There were unstable portions of the floor so school officials decided to retire the historic surface.  Pieces of the floor are currently for sale.

Mayor Dennis Estok said the city won the bid for $1,210 which will be paid out of the Mayor’s Promotional Fund.  Estok said he’s proud of the city’s opportunity to be able to display a portion of the gym floor.

“That’s why the city bid on it – it’s a piece of history.  I’m glad the school decided to do what they did with the floor,” commented Estok.

He said the eight-foot-by-eight-foot piece of gym floor is too tall to place at City Hall.  The City Council members thought it would look good at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center, or if sealed properly, placed at Serenity Gardens.  The problem is, they aren’t sure of the perfect spot to place it in the city where people can appreciate its historic nature.  They decided to leave it up to the public to decide.
