Indiana COVID-19 Deaths Reach 1,000

The total number of Hoosiers who have died from COVID-19 is now over 1,000.

Thursday’s report from the Indiana State Department of Health indicated that 1,007 people have now died of COVID-19, an increase of 43 from the previous day’s total. 

In that same report, it revealed 669 additional residents have been diagnosed with COVID-19 for an updated total of 17,835 to date.  Almost 95,000 tests have been reported to the state. 

Cass County reported an additional 40 positive cases of COVID-19 as health officials keep track of an outbreak at the Tyson meat packing plant in Logansport.  Two deaths have now been reported in that county.  The total number of cases is now 1,164

Starke County reported 16 positive COVID-19 cases while Pulaski County reported 23 and Marshall County reported 28.  La Porte County has 218 positive cases. 

The Westville Correctional Facility has 150 offenders who have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Department of Correction website.  Two inmates there have died.  The total number of offenders in quarantine at that facility is 1,460 and 170 offenders are currently in isolation. 

In all, there are 364 positive cases of COVID-19 in the state’s prison system with 3,684 prisoners in quarantine and 502 prisoners in isolation.  The affected facilities include Branchville, Heritage Trail, Indiana State Prison, Indiana Women’s Prison, Miami, New Castle, Pendleton, Pendleton Juvenile, Putnam, Reception Diagnostic, Westville, and Logansport Intake. 

The website statistics show that 176 prison staff members in the state’s facilities have tested positive for COVID-19. Forty-five of those staff members are at the Westville Correctional Facility.  One staff member at the Indiana Women’s Prison and another at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility died from COVID-19. 

Information on how many people have recovered from COVID-19 is not available in the report.
