Governor Allows Local Governments to Further Restrict Travel, Puts National Guard on Standby

Governor Eric Holcomb has put the Indiana National Guard on standby to assist local communities, in response to this weekend’s violence following the death of George Floyd.

In an executive order Sunday, the governor also allowed local governments to limit most travel, if they so choose. They had been prohibited from issuing anything above a Travel Watch, as part of the governor’s Back on Track plan. However, no Indiana county had actually issued anything above a Travel Watch as of Sunday afternoon, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s map.

Additionally, Holcomb is deploying the National Guard to state properties in Indianapolis. In a statement Sunday, the governor said, “Organized protests have taken place across the state without incident but the events that have followed, particularly in Indianapolis, have devastated businesses, defaced public monuments that are centuries old, and resulted in loss of life.”
