Knox Schools to Continue with Summer Meals for Students

The Knox Community School Corporation will continue providing students with meals this summer through the USDA Summer Food Program.

Free breakfast and lunch will be available every Monday beginning Tuesday, May 26 and continuing until the start of school at the Knox Middle school between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to noon at Door 8.  The meals will be available for pick up only.

Knox Community School Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart indicated that the first day of school will be Aug. 5, as was approved by the school board in December, but that date may change depending on procedures put forward by the Indiana Department of Education.  Dr. Reichhart said there are a lot of unknowns with regard to the start of school but they should know more soon.

Dr. Reichhart said the students who received meals during the school closure were given a letter from the school corporation about the opportunity for the summer meal program.  Notification of participation is important so the cafeteria staff knows how many meals to prepare.  About 300 students have already registered to receive meals this summer.  Dr. Reichhart said there were over 600 meals delivered to students during the school closure.

The superintendent also shared that students may come to pick up the meals without their parents or guardians, but they need to be identified at the time they arrive at the school.

The school will be reimbursed by the USDA for the cost of meals through the federal Summer Food Program.
