Two South Bend residents face drug- and gun-related charges following a LaPorte County traffic stop. A LaPorte County sheriff’s deputy says he was driving westbound on U.S. 20 near Range Road just after 6:30 Wednesday, when he saw a Ford passenger vehicle brake suddenly and pull onto the shoulder without signaling. The deputy reportedly tried to run a computer check on the license plate, but discovered that the registration was false.
After that, police say the Ford made a U-turn across U.S. 20 and then turned north onto Range Road. The deputy reportedly caught up to the vehicle, but it pulled off the road and into someone’s lawn before he tried to pull it over. As the traffic stop progressed, police say they found two firearms and an assortment of illegal drugs.
The driver, Kevin M. McDowell, 26, was arrested on suspicion of possession of cocaine and possession of a controlled substance, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm. The passenger, Jasmier L. Logan, 26, was arrested on suspicion of possession of cocaine and possession of a firearm without a permit.
