Local COVID-19 Case Numbers Increase

The numbers of positive COVID-19 cases are increasing at the local level.

In Wednesday’s report from the Indiana State Department of Health, Marshall County jumped to 50 positive cases out of 1,067 tests, while Pulaski County increased to 38 out of 379 tests and Starke County climbed to 28 out of 399 tests.  La Porte County is up to 365 cases out of 2,595 and Cass County totals 1,564 out of 3,372 tests.

These are cumulative numbers.  The number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 are not included in the report.

Health officials predicted an increase in cases once additional testing became available to residents.

Starke County reported an additional death on Wednesday, bringing that total to three.  Marshall County remains at one COVID-19 death and Pulaski County has no reported deaths.  La Porte County has reported 16 deaths.

Statewide, an additional 581 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 through testing at the Indiana State Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and private laboratories.  The new cases are results received from May 8 to May 19.  A little over 29,000 people were diagnosed with the novel coronavirus at some point since March 6.

The total number of people who have died in the state from COVID-19 is 1,716.  An additional 38 deaths were included in Wednesday’s report from May 3 to May 19.
