Progress Continues on Wythogan Park Entrance Decorating Project

The City of Knox is drawing from the creativity of its residents to beautify the entrance to Wythogan Park. Mayor Dennis Estok recently told the city council that people have been responding to the city’s request for decorated stones to be placed along the entrance wall.

“Phil Ahlenius is donating all the rocks for us that we need,” Estok explained. “There has been quite a few picked up and some of them returned. Most of them, they look pretty good – they look good.”

The city invited residents to paint stones with one-of-a-kind designs. Suggestions include animal prints, nature scenes, inspirational messages, sports themes, patriotic themes, or even movie characters.

But Estok said there were also some unexpected results, “What somebody did, they took one of our big natural rocks – we want some left natural in there – and that’s where they painted political signage on that rock.” Estok stresses that any stones with political messages or graffiti will be removed.

Residents may take a stone from the pile at the wall or use their own, but the large natural rocks should be left alone. The mayor says people can generally put their decorated rocks where they want, but some may end up being re-positioned. The area will be landscaped with plants and flowers, and plans are in the works for a design to be added to the wall itself.
