Fewer Starke, Pulaski County Residents Working in July than Previous Month

Local unemployment rates dropped significantly last month, even as the number of residents working also went down.

Starke County’s July unemployment rate was 8.9 percent, down from 12.3 percent the month before, according to the latest report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Pulaski County’s rate dropped to 6.6 percent, from 10.1 percent the month before. But the number of residents working dropped by almost 100 last month in Starke County and more than 50 in Pulaski County.

Those trends are the opposite of the previous month, as both counties have seen fluctuations in their labor force. The unemployment rates in Starke and Pulaski counties are still more than double what they were in July of 2019.

The state as a whole had a non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 7.9 percent in July, while the national rate was 10.5 percent.
