Winamac Town Council to Consider Budget Adoption Tonight

The 2019 Budget, including tax rates and appropriations for next year, will be up for adoption at tonight’s Winamac Town Council meeting.

According to the information available through the Indiana Gateway for Governmental Units, the Town of Winamac submitted a budget estimate of $1,625,712. The General Fund makes up a majority of that, containing $1,088,702. Continue reading

USDA Financial Assistance Available to Rural Homeowners Highlighted by NJ Town Superintendent

Through the USDA’s Rural Housing and Repair Loans and Grants program, assistance can be provided to very low-income homeowners to help repair, improve and modernize homes or remove health and safety hazards from rural dwellings. Residents also have the option of obtaining a loan through hard money lenders.

Starke County COAD Seeks Local Restaurants and Businesses Willing to Assist First Responders

The Starke County COAD is looking for local restaurants and businesses willing to donate food, beverages and other resources to first responders during lengthy emergency situations.

This would be a local effort similar to canteen services offered by the Red Cross. Starke County EMA Director J. Nier would assist the COAD with this initiative. When a major incident occurs and responders are expected to be out in the field for an extended period of time, she would call on COAD members to get resources to the scene as soon as possible. UPDATE: As of 10 a.m. CST the EMA Office had distributed all available radios. If you’re interested in obtaining one elsewhere, visit the official website for the NOAA Weather Radios.

To help the community be better prepared for severe weather events the Starke County Emergency Management Agency is offering free weather alert radios.

EMA Director J. Nier explained that she can program the radios to pick up information from surrounding counties as well so Starke County residents would know what’s coming their way and they’d have even more time to prepare. Continue reading

There’s a Chance You Could Qualify for a Free Mammogram

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women worldwide. To help draw attention to the disease, every year, the month of October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness month.

WHO representatives report that since there are currently no definitive answers about the cause, early detection of the disease is the cornerstone of breast cancer control. Starke County residents who meet certain qualifications are eligible to receive mammograms and subsequent testing and procedures, free of charge. Continue reading

When North Judson Town Council members met on Monday, Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Larry Wickert alerted them about an upcoming asset mapping workshop that they’re invited to attend.

Local Emergency Responders Participate in Hazardous Material Mitigation Tabletop Exercise

Local emergency personnel gathered in the Knox-Center Township Fire Department Wednesday morning to discuss how to test preparedness by responding to a hypothetical incident involving a hazardous chemical.

Starke County EMA Director J. Nier ran the exercise and it was monitored by Pulaski County EMA Director Sherri Gaillard. Officials from the medical field, law enforcement and fire departments were there to participate.

ISP Trooper Jim Strong was the first person on the scene of the hypothetical accident where a distracted semi driver carrying 6,000 of Anhydrous Ammonia crashed into a train track guardrail, damaging the tanker and causing a pungent white cloud to fill the air. Continue reading

Bullying is a serious issue that many students face and unfortunately with the introduction of new technology, it no longer stays in the schoolyard.

The Starke County Economic Development Foundation wants to help community members of all ages find a job that’s right for them. That’s why they’re hosting a few different events this week that will highlight a variety of local career options.

Today, WorkOne is teaming up with the SCEDF to host a career fair from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the Knox Middle School auxiliary gym. Starke County COAD Meets Tonight

The Starke County Community Organizations Active in Disaster will meet tonight at 6 p.m. where members will review a recent Red Cross Volunteer training session that was held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church at the end of September.

Members will also discuss efforts that have been made to get food for the Local Emergency Planning Committee’s Hazardous Response Exercise on the COAD’s behalf and plans for providing food to first responders in the future. Continue reading

Now that North Judson Officials are talking website design, members asked Billing Clerk Jennifer Vanek to look into the possibility of paying bills online. She provided some of the information she found at last week’s town council meeting.

North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin provided some details about an outside assessment that’s being done at the schools at last week’s school board meeting.

North Judson Officials Receive Initial Design Plan for Proposed Splash Pad

Plans are coming together for the potential splash pad at Norwayne Field. Councilman James Young shared some details from a preliminary design plan that was provided to him by Vortex Aquatic Structures.

The splash pad in the design would encompass the entire concrete slab that already exists at Norwayne Field. It would utilize about 69 gallons of water per minute and have 21 flush mount water fixtures. Continue reading
