Starke County expects to have a total of 20 first-time poll workers this Election Day. During last week’s election board meeting, board member Peg Brettin said voters will notice some younger people working the polls, “Because many of the older people either, one, don’t want to do it anymore, or two, are deceased,” she explained. “So that’s one of the reasons why you’re going to see a lot of new people out there.”
Knox School Board Agrees to Move Some of its Cash Reserves into Certificate of Deposit
The Knox Community School Corporation stands to bring in an extra $23,000 a year, after the school board agreed to place some of the corporation’s cash reserves in a certificate of deposit. Last week, board members authorized school officials to move up to $2 million into a one-year CD at 1st Source Bank.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Looking for New Van Buren Township Representative
The Eastern Pulaski School Board is looking for a new member. Board President Terri Johnston, who represents Van Buren Township, is stepping down because she’s moving out of the area, according to Superintendent Dan Foster. A new Van Buren Township representative is being sought to serve the remainder of Johnston’s term, which runs through the end of 2020.
Hamlet Town Council Approves Purchase of Wastewater Testing Equipment, Snowblower
The Town of Hamlet is upgrading some of its equipment. The town council Wednesday approved the purchase of a DR 3900 spectrophotometer for the town’s wastewater plant for about $4,600. Water and Street Superintendent Fred Rowe said its main purpose will be to test for ammonia. “It is expensive now, but it’ll save you money in the long run,” he said.
