A Culver man turned himself into Plymouth Police on Monday after he was accused of sexual contact with a minor several months ago.
Plymouth police say they received a phone call from 43-year-old Joey Maxon who stated he would be waiting for officers at the Wal-Mart in Plymouth. Maxon had an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Pulaski County. He was taken into custody.

A jury of eight men and six women will hear testimony in the C&C Salvage arson trial in Starke Circuit Court. Attorneys for the state and defendant James Campbell spent yesterday screening prospective jurors and finally settled on a panel of 12 with two alternates around 5:20 p.m. The scrap yard south of Knox at the intersection of U.S. 35 and Toto Road caught fire on March 20, 2014. Firefighters from eight local departments responded and spent several hours battling the blaze. One firefighter from the Bass Lake Fire Department was injured. Campbell owns the business. He was arrested eight days later on a charge of arson as a Class A felony. If convicted he faces between 20 and 50 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Continue reading
Inmates at the Starke County Jail could soon be picking up trash along county roadways under the supervision of a corrections officer. The Starke County Commissioners last night blessed Sheriff Bill Dulin’s plan to establish an inmate road crew of between three and five people to bag up debris for the county highway department to collect. Superintendent Rik Ritzler says it shouldn’t be a problem if the inmates stay in one area and Dulin coordinates schedules with him in advance. The road crew will not cost the county any additional money. The commissioners agreed it will be beneficial to the county in terms of beautification and making the inmates work. Continue reading
The last day of school for students for the spring semester of 2015 at Knox Schools has been moved forward by two days to June 1st. Superintendent A.J. Gappa told the school board last night that originally four days had been set aside for weather-related “make-up” days, but so far there have been six days of weather delay. The Pulaski County Commissioners discussed measures to close down the Pleasant View Rest Home in Winamac.
Superintendent Deb Girton told the commissioners that one more person is set to leave the county home on March 25. After that person leaves, she has five days to submit the proper paperwork to RCAP.
The commissioners made the decision to allow Girton and the other full-time staff member to stay on until May 1 to close down the property. All part-time staff will be terminated on March 31.
Plans for a new commercial and residential development in Culver will continue tonight.
The initial proposal called for the construction of condominiums along state road 10 with a bit of commercial space to complement the land. The developer came to the Culver Plan Commission in January.

Ancilla College says they published the site this week, and made mention of the features visitors will be able to take advantage of while online. The website is considered responsive across all browsers and devices; meaning visitors can access the website on their mobile devices.

The Marshall County Commissioners decided to take more time to decide upon a commercial overlay district for Marshall County until more research is conducted.
Plan Director Ralph Booker presented the ordinance amendment for the Marshall County Zoning Ordinance that would allow commercial uses such as auto repair and maintenance facilities, as well as bakeries, drug stores, hotels and motels, offices, restaurants, small wind systems, and special uses such as communications towers, light industry and self storage units.
The North Judson-San Pierre School Board will be honoring seven students for their accomplishments in the recent Academic Decathlon.
The group finished fourth in the small school division. Nick Sierzputowski finished third overall in the individual competition while Jayden Ford had with the top Math score. The board members will take the time to recognize those students along with Tyler Lee, Suleman Khan, Jarrod Jones, Jacob Dessauer and Carrie Hileman for their efforts in the Academic Decathlon.
The Knox High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble performed well at the state level over the weekend.
The state preliminary competition was held Saturday morning at Avon High School where they placed second. Their evening performance in the final round of competition found them in third place.
Knox Band Director Craige Phipps commented that the Indoor Percussion Ensemble somewhat resembles a marching band.
A Knox resident has been honored for their service to the community.
The Gleaner’s Ober Arbor Club honored Ed Hasnerl for his volunteer efforts. Hasnerl has served on the Library Board, the Gateway Committee, as the Starke County Historian, and on the IU Health Starke Hospital Board among many other boards and commissions over the years.

Students were on lockdown for a short time at Culver High School on Monday.
Staff at the school, along with authorities, conducted a routine sweep of the building to check for any illicit substances. The school corporation has been conducting the sweeps for some time.

The Pulaski County K9 was instrumental in the arrest of two people during a traffic stop on Friday.
A witness told police that a vehicle was driving erratically in the Medaryville area. The responding officer saw the vehicle after 4 p.m. ET on U.S. 421 near the West Central School. The officer saw the vehicle as a traffic hazard and conducted a traffic stop.
LaPorte Police say they have made an arrest in the case of a man accused of viewing child pornography on his laptop.

Almost a year after a set fire destroyed a Knox business the owner is scheduled to stand trial in Starke Circuit Court. James Campbell owns C&C Salvage on U.S. 35 just south of Toto Road. It caught fire on March 20. The Bass Lake, Knox-Center Township, Hamlet, Washington Township, Koontz Lake, North Judson-Wayne Township, San Pierre and Monterey Fire Departments all responded to the blaze and spent several hours getting it under control. One firefighter was injured. Black smoke was visible for miles, and a brigade of tanker trucks hauled water to the scene. Continue reading
Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin will discuss the acquisition of a second K9 with the county commissioners when they meet this evening. Last year the county bought a dog from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department after one of their K9 handlers left for personal reasons. K9 Terror is a certified drug and tracking dog and has already assisted with numerous drug-related investigations since joining the force in December. Dulin will also talk to the commissioners about establishing a county inmate road crew, according to the advance agenda for tonight’s meeting. It starts at 6 p.m. at the annex building. Pulaski County Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer requested grant match funds as an additional appropriation at this week’s Pulaski County Council meeting.
Origer said the county is the recipient of two grants. The Hometown Collaboration Initiative grant will help small communities, like Pulaski County, to expand jobs based on existing economic assets and improve attractiveness and quality of life.
The long-time director of a local non-profit has decided to retire.
Joan Haugh has been with Community Services of Starke County for the past 40 years. She recently informed the organization’s board of directors that she will leave her duties at the end of July.

The Knox City Council encourages all to work hard to highlight positive aspects in Knox.
Several projects are upcoming that city council members are looking toward to help improve the city. The City of Knox is working on a comprehensive plan to improve the downtown area and blighted properties. Knox High School students are doing their part in beautifying the downtown area with a Serenity Garden project. Gazebos, benches and plants will be placed at the site for an uplifting feel for the downtown area.
A grocery store in Starke County will be going up for sale.
The owner’s of Ray’s Super Foods disclosed on Wednesday of this week that they were planning to “make a change.” The move was announced as an advertisement in The Market – a weekly advertising publication.
