Culver Community School Board members received a brief enrollment report from Superintendent Karen Shuman when they met Monday night.
According to the Indiana Department of Education enrollment report, Culver Community Schools had a total enrollment of 840 students in 2016. Shuman shared that after comparing this year’s number to last year’s, she found the school corporation has nine more students in general. Continue reading
Harold Welter presented information about the Cheryl Lyn Welter Charitable Foundation to the West Central School Board on Thursday night. Superintendent Don Street said the board members were happy to help raise funds to help underprivileged students.
“We appreciate Harold coming to our school board meeting and presenting on the tax exempt charitable foundation for the purpose of providing grants to help teachers and others involved with local school children to provide small things that underprivileged students may not be able to afford,” said Street. “We appreciate Harold sharing that and making West Central a part of that.” Continue reading
Some local school corporations saw their letter grades improve slightly, while others remained flat. On Wednesday, the Indiana State Board of Education finalized the A-to-F grades for each of the state’s school corporations for the 2016-2017 school year.
The month of November is acknowledged as Diabetes Awareness Month. During this time, individuals impacted by diabetes, or those who may be pre-diabetic are encouraged to take a look at their diet, lifestyle choices and health conditions to see whether or not they’re living healthily.
Starke Hospital offers a variety of programs to assist community members with diabetes management. Regional Manager of Community Relations for Starke Hospital Stacey Kellogg said they offer several services through their diabetes program that can assist individuals, pre and post diagnosis. A Trail Creek man suspected of aggravated battery turned himself into police on Friday, Nov. 3.
According to the Trail Creek Police Department, Gordon R. Gardner threw a bottle of alcohol at a female patron while he was a bartender at Decoy’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill in Trail Creek. The alleged incident that left the woman injured happened at 2:20 a.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 29. Continue reading
How to continue with Winamac’s swimming pool rebuilding effort without the town’s financial support will be the topic of two meetings this month. The Winamac Pool Committee will hold an informational meeting for the public next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac.
The time for Culver’s local Stellarbration event has been amended to accommodate a change in Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch’s schedule.
Culver was named the Division II Stellar Community by Lt. Governor Crouch on Wednesday, Oct. 18. The state Stellarbration was held the following week while the Town of Culver scheduled the local event for Nov. 8. The start time for the event has been moved to 4:30 p.m. ET. Continue reading
Nearly 400,000 children are currently in foster care nationally. More than 100,000 of those kids are legally available for adoption. November is National Adoption Awareness month and one local business is doing their part to help connect children in need to individuals who may be looking to make an addition to their family.
From now until November 10th, Bailey’s Discount Center will feature a photo exhibit from the Indiana Heart Gallery. The Indiana Heart Gallery is an organization that travels around the state with compelling portraits and stories of children in need of adoptive families. WorkOne in Pulaski County and Starke County are working together to host a kids’ coat drive this month. Their goal is to assist local children who may not have the proper apparel for the approaching winter months.
Youth Business Engagement Specialist Kathi Holem said this is the first year that WorkOne has held a coat drive. She said that although they will mainly be collecting coats for small children, they are open to donations of other kids’ winter wear as well. Continue reading
The Indiana State Police Lowell Post is hosting a local fundraiser to purchase additional Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) for patrol cars at the Lowell Post. Each post in the state is hosting a fundraiser toward the same goal.

Two offenders were sentenced in Starke Circuit Court Wednesday morning on battery charges in two separate cases.
Scott Tharpe, 35, of Plymouth, pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to a felony charge of battery of a person less than the age of 14. Tharpe admitted to Judge Kim Hall that on July 12, 2016, at a residence in Knox he threw his nephew on the ground and pushed his face in the dirt. He also pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement. Tharpe admitted to resisting arrest from Officer Clint Norem in the same incident. Two people were sentenced in Starke Circuit Court Wednesday morning on drug charges in two separate incidents.
Joshua Muzik, 20, of Monon, pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine and was sentenced on that charge to 13 months in the Starke County Justice Center with seven months suspended to be served on probation. He also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving while suspended and was sentenced to six months in the Starke County Justice Center. Those two sentences will be served concurrently, or at the same time. Continue reading
What to do with $135,000 raised for Winamac’s swimming pool rebuilding project is expected to be discussed during tonight’s Winamac Park Board meeting. That money was raised through private donations and fundraisers, and placed in a fund at the Community Foundation of Pulaski County. But now that the town has pulled its official support of the project, the park board has to decide what its next steps will be.
