The Naegeli court reporting Council is looking to make some changes to the way it operates. Most significantly, members are considering the addition of a council vice-president, according to Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Collins. She says that currently, if the council president is absent, one member is chosen to take charge just for that one meeting.
Knox Board of Works Receives Update on Unsafe House
The Knox Board of Public Works and Safety heard from homeowner Lucia Valladares on the progress on renovation efforts on the home at 6 N. Pearl Street.
Valladares said she was involved in a motor vehicle accident and hasn’t been able to get any work done on the property. She plans to focus on the exterior part of the building yet this year. Her plan is to demolish two side additions and the back porch, reinforce the foundation, start up siding installation, replace the roof, and construct a new addition.

Road work is planned in La Porte County next week to increase safety on U.S. 20.
Indiana Department of Transportation crews will install rumble strips on U.S. 20 between U.S. 35 and the U.S. 20 and State Road 2 intersection. Officials say engineers found a way to use equipment and resources from a nearby project on State Road 39 to install this safety enhancement on the heavily traveled highway.

Culver Town Council Approves Rezoning Ordinance
The Culver Town Council this week adopted an ordinance that rezones two parcels.
The ordinance proposes the rezoning of 1213 Hoosier Lane and 1201 West Shore Drive from Residential (R-1) to Lake District (L-1). This action would combine two lots into one lot and grant lake access.
Man Attempts to Lure Children into Car
Officers from the La Porte City Police Department are attempting to find a man who allegedly attempted to lure three children into his car in the 400 block of Fox Street Wednesday afternoon. The children are ages 12, 4 and 3.
The children’s mother reportedly told police that the trio was playing in a neighbor’s yard when a man called the children over to his silver-colored Honda Pilot. When he called their attention, he began taking off his seatbelt, according to police. The report indicates that the 12-year-old child told her mother and the mother approached the SUV yelling at the man. The man then fled the area.
Blackburn Case set for Status Hearing
Edward Blackburn will return to court for a status update in October.
Blackburn, 31, is facing a murder charge in Starke County. He is accused of killing Cord Colgrove in an incident in rural North Judson in March. Formal charges were filed on March 6 and he has been incarcerated in the Starke County Justice Center since his arrest.

Pulaski County Students Continuing with Manufacturing Training
Pulaski County is moving ahead with its manufacturing training efforts. Fifteen students are now enrolled in West Central High School’s Advanced Manufacturing class, after completing an introductory class last year. That’s according to Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer. He told the county commissioners Monday another 12 students are starting the introductory course this fall.
North Judson Council Updated on Pioneer Cemetery Beautification Efforts
Efforts to beautify North Judson’s Pioneer Cemetery continue to move ahead. Dr. Dennis Dalphond has been leading a group of volunteers in restoring the cemetery’s stone terrace.
Culver Town Council Cuts Budget
The Culver Town Council met in a work session Tuesday afternoon to discuss the 2018 budget.
Council President Ginny Bess Munroe commented that every department worked hard to trim $17,000 from next year’s budget. The budget will be published with the public hearing on the budget set for a modified meeting date of Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Knox Board of Works Approves Services for Stormwater Separation Project
The Knox Board of Public Works discussed a proposal for services to conduct a stormwater separation project in the alley between Washington Street and Lake Street, west of Main Street.
The project will include installing a new storm line in the alley and abandoning the existing storm sewer connections into the current sanitary sewer. The lines would be rerouted into the new storm sewer.
Oregon-Davis School Board Approves Teacher Appreciation Grant Policy, Discusses 2018 Budget
The Oregon-Davis School Board has officially decided how Teacher Appreciation Grants will be distributed. State law now requires schools to have a formal policy in place, specifying how the grants will be split up among effective- and highly-effective-rated teachers.
Knox School Board Approves Pay Increase for Extra-Curricular School Bus Drivers
The Knox Community School Board hopes to motivate school bus drivers to take on extra-curricular driving trips with a pay increase they implemented during their meeting earlier this week. Union Mills Sponsors 31st Annual Mill Pond Fest Aug. 25-27
A golf cart rally at 6 p.m. tonight will kick off the 31st Annual Mill Pond Festival. Line up for the rally will take place in front of the clubhouse at 100 Mill Pond Road in Union Mills. Food vendors, craft booths and a beer garden will be open tonight, tomorrow and Sunday.
Saturday festivities start at 8 a.m. with the Lions Club 5K and skeet shoot pre-qualification. Skeet shoot finals are at 1.p.m. The parade will start at the fire station and commence at 10 a.m. followed by an opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Canoe rides and games will be available and the beer garden opens at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Tour de La Porte Starts Today!
More than one-thousand people from various cities and states will gather this weekend for fun and fundraising at the 16th annual Tour de La Porte walking, running and cycling event sponsored by the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte. 100 percent of proceeds from the event go to benefit local cancer patients directly. The money can assist with things like treatment, medication and wigs as well as in town and out of town transportation costs and even child care. Continue reading
