Cooley Named Yellowstone Trail Festival Grand Marshal

A lifelong Hamlet resident is the grand marshal for this year’s Yellowstone Trail Festival Parade. Jim Cooley is known as the Hamlet Inventor. He’s been tinkering since his teenage years, when he worked at Jones’ Repair Shop. Cooley did body work, mechanical repairs, painting and whatever else needed done on a vehicle. He also got hands-on lessons about gyrocopter manufacturing from Merle Jones. Continue reading

Starke County Looks to Expand WorkOne Partnership

 The Starke County Commissioners hope to expand their success with a WorkOne job training program to other departments within county government. Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler was the first to take advantage of the agency’s offer of free help to teach young people so-called “soft skills” like showing up to work on time, following directions and adhering to a schedule. WorkOne pays the employees to hone their job skills, and there is no cost to the county. Continue reading

LaPorte Police Issue “Blanket Ordinance” Reminder

LaPorte Blanket OrdinanceEarly birds vying for a prime spot to watch the 70th annual LaPorte Jaycees Parade on July 4th may wind up with fines. The city’s “Blanket Ordinance” prohibits the placing of any item or object in the public right-of-way as an attempt to reserve a spot along the parade route prior to 10 a.m. on July 3rd. Rural LaPorte County Woman Dead Following Crash

 
 

A Monday morning crash has resulted in the death of the car’s driver.

LaPorte County authorities were called to County Road 200 East south of State Road 4 around 6:50 a.m. According to an incident report, a 2004 Hyundai Sonata was found overturned in a field several hundred feet from the roadway by a passerby when authorities were called.

NIPSCO Enters Construction Phase on Reynolds-Topeka Line

nipsco-logoConstruction on the Reynolds-Topeka Transmission Line is getting underway and NIPSCO says they continue to expect operations to begin in 2018.

The project is a multi-county, multi-million dollar project designed to increase the effectiveness of utilities providers in Northern Indiana. NIPSCO isn’t alone, however, in their efforts. Similar projects are going on across the country in an attempt to meet federal renewable energy standards.

State Fire Marshal Informs Hoosiers About Fireworks Laws

 As Independence Day draws near, the State Fire Marshal’s office is reminding Hoosiers about fireworks laws currently on the books.

In Indiana, the person setting off the fireworks may be held liable for damage to any property. In addition, fireworks are only allowed to be discharged on the owner’s property, or on the property of someone who has consented to it. Some communities may have specially designated areas for fireworks usage.
