IRS Offers Cash Payment Option at 7-Eleven Stores
The Internal Revenue Service is now offering taxpayers the option to pay in cash at 7-Eleven locations. The IRS says it’s partnering with ACI Worldwide’s OfficialPayments.com and the PayNearMe Company to provide the service. It lets people make payments without the need of a bank account or credit card at over 7,000 7-Eleven stores nationwide, including locations in South Bend, Mishawaka, and Griffith. Continue reading
Suspected Overdose Linked to LaPorte County Death
An investigation is ongoing following what the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department says is a suspected overdose death.
Officers responded to the 3100 block of Edgebrook Drive in the Weatherstone Village Complex just before 3:00 a.m. 36-year-old Andrew Trott was found unresponsive by a woman living at the residence.
Sheriff Launches Inmate Garden at Starke County Jail
Inmates at the Starke County Jail will be learning life skills while putting food on the table this summer. Sheriff Bill Dulin says they’re taking advantage of the 22 acre site east of Knox.
“We’re going to raise some produce and have the inmates work it, plant it, produce it, harvest it, and we’re also going to serve that produce to the population in the jail. We’re going to have potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes and some melons, too.” Continue reading

The road funding bill approved in the final days of the legislative session will provide a significant cash infusion for Starke County. Cleanup at Crown Hill Cemetery in Knox is scheduled for Saturday, April 9. Officials say all items will be removed from graves, including trinkets, lighting, statuary, gravel, edging, flags, all plastic and planted flowers, shepherds hooks and shrubs. Officials Warn of Publisher’s Clearing House Scam
Scammers claiming to represent Publisher’s Clearinghouse are making the rounds in the area. They’ve reportedly called residents advising they’ve won the sweepstakes but need to pay a registration fee to claim their prize. “Winners” are also told the delivery truck driver is on his way and given another number to call to pay a state and local fee. NIPSCO Reports Increase in Phone Scams
NIPSCO is warning customers of a spike in reports of telephone scams. The company says it’s heard from a number of customers who say they’ve gotten suspicious calls from people claiming to be NIPSCO employees. Highway Superintendent Talks Truck Routes
The Starke County Highway Department is keeping an eye on alternate routes trucks are taking to access the Knox Industrial Park while planning for a long-term solution. The City of Knox recently started enforcing a truck route to keep tractor-trailers off Culver Road and other residential streets. The marked truck route uses State Road 8 to 300 East. Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler says some over-the-road drivers are also turning by Kem-Co and taking 200 South. Continue reading
