New Program Aims to Curb Truancy
The Starke County Prosecutor’s Office, juvenile probation department and child protection services are joining forces with local schools in an effort to address truancy issues. Prosecutor Nicholas Bourff says this is becoming a significant problem in some schools, where students have anywhere from 30 to 40 unexcused absences. Culver Finalizes Pay Increases for Several Departments in 2016
The Town of Culver has bumped the pay for a few of its employees in 2016, others may have to wait until 2017 to see their pay increased.
City of Knox Christmas Tree Pickup Begins
The City of Knox will begin picking up natural Christmas trees today. They should be placed at the curb in the same location one would use for seasonal brush pickup. All ornaments and tinsel should be removed.
Trees can also be taken to the compost drop-off site behind city hall. The city’s trash contractor will not pick up natural trees.
LaPorte Authorities Arrest One Following Multiple Gunshots
LaPorte County Sheriff’s Police were called to a residence Wednesday evening following reports of gunfire.
Officers arrived on scene to the 8400 East block of Emory Road. While securing the scene, another gunshot was allegedly heard coming from the home. Deputies made entry to the home through an open door.

“We’re the crossroads of the nation, and right now we’re kind of in a real trick bag. What brought it to light was the I-65 at the Wildcat bridge down there in Lafayette. When that went out, it shut 65 down. The whole nation, the whole nation was tied up. Donations Allow Culver Library Chance to Provide Emergency Medical Care
The Culver-Union Township Public Library is now home to a medical device that may one day save a life.
Members of the library’s fundraising arm, Friends of the Library, have been accepting donations to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator. The equipment is used as a means to restart a proper heart rhythm during cardiac arrest.
