Starke County’s unemployment figures are up again. The January figure shows Starke County’s rate at 12.1%, the eighth highest in the state. Starke County’s rate was 11.3% in December meaning that we jumped .8% in a month.
Plymouth Man Arrested on Burglary Charges
A suspect in a burglary at People’s Drug Store in Plymouth has been apprehended.
Plymouth Police Department officers report that Adam Lolmaugh, 32, of Plymouth, was arrested Wednesday after police received information that he was the one responsible for the burglary. The incident happened on February 16th.
Lolmaugh was at his home when police took him into custody. Police interviewed Lolmaugh and he confessed to the burglary. He was then booked in the Marshall County Jail on one count of Burglary.
Indiana Democrats Remain in Illnois
Saying they’re not being “spoiled sports” the Indiana House Democrats are still in Urbana, Illinois asking their Republican counterparts to negotiate on some of the bills they feel strongly about. 17th District State Representative Nancy Dembowski (D-Knox) said yesterday that by staying away, the Democrats hope to slow the process down and to give the public a chance to look into some of these bills. Dembowski said she didn’t think the Republicans ran on some of the agenda items they are trying to pass.
Ancilla to Host Book Signing for Rev. Dr. Sam Boys
Ancilla College will host a book signing on Monday, March 14th with author Dr. Rev. Sam Boys, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Ancilla.
The signing – held in Room 231 at 6:00 p.m. EST – will promote the release of his book, entitled “An Ancient Sound for the Present Moment” and is a free event open to the public.
The book explores the health benefits of breath and sound and how playing the didgeridoo can help clear the mind and relax the body.
Boys will also share methods of relaxation with those in attendance, including the use of breathing techniques to help relieve stress and facilitate wellness.
Plymouth Police Arrest Two at Wal-Mart in Separate Incidents
Two individuals were arrested last week at Wal-Mart in Plymouth.
On Friday, March 4th, Plymouth Police officers were called to Wal-Mart to remove a trespasser. Wal-Mart workers reported that 27-year-old Donielle Good of Plymouth had a no trespass order. Police confirmed this order and Donielle was arrested and taken to the Marshall County Jail on a preliminary charge of Trespassing.
Sectional Champion Blue Jays
The North Judson Blue Jays won the school’s 20th Sectional Championship in boys’ basketball. The Jays defeated Hebron, Culver, and Winamac to move on to Regional competition.
Gas Prices Continue to Rise
The second greatest jump in regular gasoline at the pump has occurred the last two weeks. The jump has been 33 cents a gallon.
“The oil companies are not the culprit, they are the beneficiary,” said Don Good of the Good Oil company in Winamac. “They benefit from all this and I don’t think that you’ll find the oil executives sitting around the table crying over $100, $130 crude because they will just make a lot of money off of it. They aren’t the ones driving that market, but they’re more than happy to ride along.”
Daylight Saving Time Begins Sunday, March 13th
Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, March 13th, which means everyone will move their clocks ahead one hour. Clocks may be moved at bedtime Saturday night or at 2:00 a.m. prevailing time Sunday morning.
The purpose of Daylight Saving Time is to extend daylight by an hour in the afternoons during spring, summer and much of the fall. While Indiana observes Daylight Saving Time, the state remains divided in telling time. 80 of the 92 counties use Eastern Time while the other 12 use Central Time. Arizona and Hawaii use Standard Time year round.
WKVI Website Reaches One Million Hit Milestone
Since putting our website up in August of 2009, we have received over one million hits. As of March 3rd, the number was actually 1,111,383.
We started with 25,000-41,000 hits a month until July of 2010 when we went over the 50,000 monthly count. In February 2010, we had 160,037 hits for our largest monthly total. This could be contributed to inclement weather and visits to our closings and delays page.

Here is just some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:
76 individuals were arrested last Saturday after police received an anonymous tip of an illegal cock fighting operation at a residence in North Judson. Eleven face felony charges of Animal Fighting Contest, while others face a misdemeanor charge of Attending an Animal Fight Contest. Four of those charged with felonies remain on hold in the Starke County Jail as they have been identified as illegal immigrants.
Indiana’s Secretary of State Indicted on Seven Charges
Charlie White, who campaigned at a huge Republican rally last summer in Knox, and was subsequently elected as Secretary of State, was indicted on 7 felony counts yesterday. The felony counts include Voter Fraud, Perjury and Theft. He was released from the Hamilton County Jail after being booked and posting a $10,000 bond. If convicted of the felony charges, he would have to give up his office.

Stephanie Balon Signs with Purdue Calumet
South Central senior basketball member Stephanie Balon has chosen to attend Purdue Calumet to continue her basketball career. Balon was the leading scorer for the Satellites this season and will look to continue her successful career at the collegiate level.
State Representative Nancy Dembowski Gives Update from Illinois
WKVI radio checked in yesterday with Representative Nancy Dembowski, who has been holed up in the Comfort Inn in Urbana, Illinois.
The Representative, along with others in the Democrat House, have been in Urbana since last Tuesday, February 22nd. Their action has closed down work at the House on bills the Democrats oppose.
Dembowski was quick to refute an off-the-cuff comment attributed to Governor Mitch Daniels that while the Republicans were working, the Democrats were enjoying sessions in a “hot tub.”
