A 1959 graduate of Concordia University, River Forest, IL, Mr. Herring served the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod as both principal and teacher in congregations in Ulm, AR, Higginsville, MO, Stuttgart, AR, Ft. Wayne, IN and North Judson, IN where he retired with 40 years of service. In 1976, Louis received a M.S. degree in Education from the University of St. Francis in Ft. Wayne. He began his teaching ministry in a one-room school house and ended his years as both principal and 7/8th grade teacher. His favorite subjects to teach were religion and geography.

During his years of service, Mr. Herring served on the Board of Regents at Concordia University, Seward, NE for 13 years, and also on the Board of Regents at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN for 12 years. Mr. Herring actively served with the Lutheran Layman’s League, Kiwanis Club, led Bible classes, and was a strong proponent of the Lutheran Hour.

After his retirement in 1999, Louis continued to serve in the Indiana District by assisting congregations and serving on the District Board of Christian Education. He loved leading Sunday morning worship services, teaching Bible class, and produced a local radio program called “Sounds of Praise”.

The children of Louis Herring feel blessed to have been born and raised in a family whose focus was centered on Christ. Laughter, music, travel, photography, games, and family devotions were integral parts of the Herring household. The importance of a Christian education and service to others was impressed on the hearts and minds of his children.

Louis Herring was preceded in death by his father John Herring, mother Edna Frieda Heimbecher Herring, brother Elmer Herring, and sister Gertrude Fiehler. His parents died in 1945 and 1944 respectively. Louis Herring was then raised by the family of Bill Koenig, beside his childhood home, near Uniontown, MO.
