Redskin Brigade Heads to Semi-State Competition

06-07-14 Music Recycled picThe Knox Redskin Brigade will compete this afternoon for a shot at a state championship. Their gold rating last Saturday at the Indiana State School Music Association regional competition earned the band a slot in today’s competition at Decatur Central High School. They must place in the top 10 among the 20 schools performing in order to advance. “It’s a pretty tall order for any band, really,” band director Craige Phipps said. “These guys have done an amazing job over the last two weeks. I’m pretty confident they can do it. They’ve just got to have ‘that show’ – that one show.”

Phipps added the Redskin Brigade is more than capable of advancing to state.

“They’ve had some amazing performances this year, and the best thing about this group is everyone keeps considering them an underdog. We don’t consider ourselves an underdog. We keep rising to the challenge every week. I tell these guys when they come off the field after a performances, ‘you guys just had a great performance, but it’s not good enough any more. Now we need to take that next step.’ They’ve really risen to that challenge all season long,” he said.

The Redskin Brigade will take the field at 4:20 p.m. CDT today at Decatur Central High School. The state finals will take place Saturday, Nov. 8 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Two More Chances to Vote Absentee

Voters have two more chances to vote absentee.

Starke County voters may vote today in the second floor meeting room in the Starke County Courthouse from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. CT. In Pulaski County, absentee voting is available from 8 a.m. to noon ET in the courthouse and absentee voting in Marshall County is in the courthouse today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET.

Triton Superintendent Talks about Fight for Public Schools

The Triton School Superintendent held a public presentation Thursday night to discuss the status of funding for public schools.

“The money that we used to get we no longer get,” stated Donna Burroughs. “Triton, for instance, is receiving $1.7 million less in 2014 than we received in 2004. Everyone knows that the cost of everything is going up so it’s making it very difficult for our schools to maintain programs and staffing as it has been in the past.”

Freeman Clark was old and seriously ill. From his bed, he begged his sons to carry him to the county seat of Vevey, so he could cast his vote for his friend Daniel Kelso, who was running for the Indiana State Senate. They took him. He voted. And on the way home from his last public duty, Clark died.

Victory Christian Church Burns Mortgage

The annual Victory Christian Church harvest party was extra special this year as members of the congregation burned their mortgage. The fellowship was founded in 1993 by Jim and Brenda Pradke and went from meeting in their living room to the old California Township school building. In 1996 the congregation bought a vacant church building on the north edge of Toto in 1996. Within a few months attendance increased by one-third. Continue reading →

Early Morning Fight Lands Man in Jail

Formal charges are pending against the man accused of hitting and biting another man at a Bremen residence early this morning. Officers from the Marshall County Police Department responded to 1426 Jute Road in Bremen at 12:43 a.m. for a report of a fight in progress. A man told them Larry W. Baltes, 40, had hit him in the face and bitten his upper thigh. The victim refused medical treatment, according to a news release. Baltes was arrested on preliminary charges of battery resulting in moderate injury, public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Knox City Council to Consider Dumpster Ordinance

The Knox City Council members will soon be putting together a dumpster ordinance.

Several complaints have been received concerning the placement and longevity of dumpsters at a locations throughout the city. The council members will fashion an ordinance that is suited to the needs of the city to regulate the use of the containers.

City Attorney David Matsey gave the council members a comprehensive draft of an ordinance that he put together using information from several different ordinances from different municipalities. He urged all of the members to look through the document and select items that may be relevant to the city. They will look at paring down the language at the council’s next meeting on Monday, Nov. 10.

Knox Street Department Keeping Busy

Knox Street Superintendent Jeff Borg told the Board of Public Works this week that the leaf pick-up program is keeping the employees busy. He added that the department is gearing up for the winter season. The first order of road salt should be placed at the first of December but the supply the city has now is healthy. He said prices jumped 50 percent per ton of road salt over last year’s price. Borg stated that the city should be in good shape and hopes that the weather isn’t as bad as last year.

Russell Prosser Convicted in Marshall County Trial

A Marshall County jury convicted a defendant on several charges in a two-day trial in Marshall County Superior Court.

The jury members deliberated over three hours and found Russell Prosser guilty on one count of possession of stolen property, one count of resisting law enforcement, four counts of unauthorized entry of motor vehicles and four counts of theft of items found in those vehicles.

Prosser was arrested on Dec. 9, 2013 after he had stolen items out of cars from a number of Culver residents the previous evening. He also led police in a foot pursuit. He was apprehended the next day after he was found sleeping in his truck in the McDonald’s parking lot in LaPaz.

Sentencing Hearing Set for Jeremy Rowe

A defendant in an incident in January of 2012 where a man was robbed, ordered to a bank at gunpoint and severely beaten appeared in Starke Circuit Court yesterday for a status hearing.

Jeremy Rowe has pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to charges of burglary and receiving stolen property in his alleged participation in the event. His brother, Randall Rowe, was previously sentenced to 25 years in prison in his involvement in this incident and is currently serving time in the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Starke County Election Board Discusses Political Signs, Travel Board Votes

The Starke County Election Board discussed political sign disclaimers during their meeting Thursday afternoon.

A written complaint was filed by Tammie Taulbee, a Knox School Board candidate, that four candidates did not have disclaimers on their signs placed in public areas promoting their candidacy for the General Election.

It is law that a disclaimer be included on all political material stating who paid for the material and whether any candidate approves of the material if the material is paid for by someone other than the candidate.

The staff at the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department had so much fun with last week’s trick-or-treat event at the justice center last week that they’re going to do it again tonight!

Sheriff Michael Gayer said the event last week was held in conjunction with the Halloween event at the Tippecanoe River State Park north of Winamac. He said that there are treats left to give to the kids of Pulaski County. Stop by the justice center tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
