Knox city officials recently met with the Green 3 to put together ideas for a comprehensive plan for the city. A tour was taken of the city where a list of needs was assembled.
The downtown area was highlighted as a possible revitalization area. Those in attendance believe that the downtown area needs updated with brighter lighting and greater ambiance. Support for existing services, historic preservation, housing needs and economic development were all included as ideas.
Counterfeit $20 bills turned up at two La Porte businesses over the weekend. A representative of J&J Liquors at 714 E. Lincolnway told La Porte Police that they unknowingly accepted a counterfeit $20 bill from a customer sometime on Friday, Sept. 26. Their bank notified them that the fake bill was included in the deposit for the day’s receipts. Continue reading
The General Election is Tuesday, Nov. 4 and in order to cast your important vote you need to be properly registered.
Voter registration is open this week at all county clerk’s offices. The last day to register to vote is Monday, Oct. 6. You must be registered by the end of the business day on Oct. 6 in order to vote in the November election.
If you need to register to vote or have questions about your current registration, call the Starke County clerk’s office at (574) 772-9160, the Pulaski County clerk’s office at (574) 946-3313 or the Marshall County Clerk’s office at (574) 936-8922. Election and registration information can also be found on the state’s website.
Absentee voting in all three counties begins Tuesday, Oct. 7.
The Knox Middle School is hosting Manufacturer’s Day tomorrow. A total of 15 local companies will have booths set up for 7th graders from Knox, Oregon-Davis and North Judson-San Pierre to visit and learn about what they do. Students will also learn what qualifications are necessary to work there. Knox Middle School Principal Joshua Pugh says hands-on learning like this really helps students think about their futures.
Deer archery season opens today in Indiana. All hunters must be licensed and must use legal archery equipment as defined by the DNR. These include long bows, compound bows or recurve bows and arrows. The bow must have a pull of at least 35 pounds. Arrows must be tipped with broadheads that are metal, metal-edged or napped flint; chert or obsidian. New this year, hunters can use a draw-loc device with archery equipment during archery season. Continue reading
Traffic on State Road 8 west of Knox will be reduced to one lane with flagmen for the next few weeks. Starting today crews will be cutting the edge of the highway at the intersection of County Road 300 East to get ready for paving. Continue reading
NASCAR penalized the No. 74 team or a rules infraction committed during Nationwide Series practice on Sept. 26 at Dover International Speedway.
Officials found that a weight fell out of the racecar during the event as it was not properly attached. That was a violation of the rules concerning car weight and it was found to be an action detrimental to stock car racing.
A crew member for a team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series has been suspended indefinitely for failing a drug test.
William Coralline was working as a crew member with the No. 55 team at the time of the violation. He was a regular crew member in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Coralline reportedly violated two sections in the NASCAR Rule Book: actions detrimental to stock car racing and a violation of the NASCAR Substance Abuse Policy. The violation occurred on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
A passenger in a vehicle involved in a Sunday morning crash at the intersection of State Roads 10 and 39 east of North Judson was flown to a South Bend hospital. A news release from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department indicates multiple people were injured. The North Judson-Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department had to cut one person from the wreckage. Officers from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a shooting that occurred Monday night at 5055 North Pawnee Trail.
When officers arrived at the scene, no victims were found but evidence was discovered that was consistent with a shooting, according to a news release.
Police say a short time later investigators were notified that a man entered IU Health LaPorte Hospital and another man entered Saint Anthony Memorial Hospital in Michigan City with gunshot wounds. One victim had a superficial wound on his hand while the other victim was transferred to the trauma center at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
A Hamlet man was killed instantly after the vehicle he was driving collided with a semi truck on U.S. 30 at Frontage Road in Hamlet late Monday morning. Starke County Coroner Kris Rannells says Lawrence Siegel, 72, died of massive blunt force trauma including head, neck, chest and internal injuries. Continue reading
A semi vs. passenger car accident at the intersection of State Road 10 and Range Road just east of North Judson Monday morning resulted in fatal injuries.
Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 11 a.m. and found a semi tanker on its side engulfed in flames. The passenger car involved in the accident was located on the side of the roadway, according to the accident report. The driver was airlifted from the scene to South Bend Memorial Hospital where she later died of her injuries. The passenger and the semi driver were taken to IU Health Starke Hospital and later transferred to South Bend Memorial Hospital. Their medical conditions are unknown.
The Eastern Pulaski School Board members held a 1028 hearing yesterday afternoon to give those in attendance a scope of an extensive project in the works at all three of the schools to begin in March of 2015 and to end in October of 2016.
The board members did a walking tour of the buildings and made the collective decision to update and modernize the schools. Technology is the wave of the future and the school board felt it necessary to recognize that fact and to create the infrastructure necessary for that need moving forward with curriculum and educational space.
The Culver Town Council members discussed raising the water and sewer rates to cover operating and maintenance costs.
Culver officials told WKVI News that the water rate has not been raised in several years as is the case with the sewer rate.
The 50-year-old wastewater plant is in need of some rehabilitation. The town is working on getting an OCRA grant to help the process.
Starke County voters can meet candidates for federal, state and local office tomorrow evening at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in downtown Knox. The Starke County Chamber of Commerce Meet the Candidates night starts at 6 p.m. Executive Director Debbie Mix hopes for a good turnout. She notes the event is meet and greet, not a debate. Today is the deadline to submit your nominations for the Henry F. Schricker award.
The award is given to a Starke County resident who has shown that he or she has put “service before self”. That was the motto of former governor Henry F. Schricker who exemplified that action while he served in office and as a resident of Starke County.
The Starke County Chamber of Commerce will review all submissions and a committee of former award winners will select this year’s recipient. A nomination form is available on the Starke County Chamber’s website at www.starkecountychamber.com. Include the qualities and deeds of your nominee. The entry should include the person’s voluntary contributions and benefits to Starke County.
An informational open house for prospective foster parents is planned for Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Starke County office of the Department of Child Services at 318 E. Culver Road in Knox.
Regional foster care specialist Renee Woodworth will be available to discuss foster parent responsibilities as well as the licensing process, including the home study.
There are 132 abused or neglected children in the region currently living in non-relative foster homes because it is not safe for them to live in their own homes. There are 5,046 kids statewide living in non-relative foster homes.
The United Way of Marshall County has a busy week planned. Volunteers will be visiting businesses in the community to distribute information about United Way. They will be in Bremen on Wednesday and in Plymouth on Friday.
The volunteers will be accepting contributions from businesses to go towards the community. United Way of Marshall County Executive Director Linda Yoder says these visits show businesses how United Way can help.
A trip for two men didn’t go as planned after the car they were in became disabled on train track near Tipton Street crossing in LaPorte.
In the overnight hours on Saturday, LaPorte police were called to the scene where they found a pickup stuck on tracks west of the location, near Detroit Street. The staff in the dispatch center was alerted to contact the railroad and stop all train traffic until the vehicle could be removed.
