Pulaski County Commissioners, Council Discuss Airport Concerns
The Pulaski County Commissioners and Pulaski County Council members met in joint session to clarify some questions that have arisen concerning the airport.
The issues that the council members discussed during their meeting last week was if Airport Manager Bud Wagner’s position with the county needs to be full time and about the revenue coming into the airport.
Marshall County Commissioners Name Highway Department Appointments
The Marshall County Commissioners approved new hires for two new positions at the highway department.
On Monday morning, Commissioner Deb Griewank presented the recommendations of Laurie Baker as the administration manager at the highway department and Jason Peters as the supervisor of county highways. Baker is currently working in Judge Dean Colvin’s office in superior court while Peters is serving in the capacity of interim highway superintendent.
Bridge Repair To Start Today on 700 East
A LaPorte-based contractor will begin repairs on the bridge over the Yellow River on County Road 700 East today. It’s been closed since a tree floating down the river struck one of the bridge supports earlier this year, rendering the structure unstable. Continue reading
Pulaski County EMS Still Waiting to use Repaired Ambulance
A fire-damaged ambulance that has been rebuilt and brought back is still not an active part of the EMS fleet in Pulaski County.
Jason Bunger from Novotny Insurance and EMS Director Nikki Lowry told the commissioners that the state is holding up the process.
Knox City Council to Discuss Ordinances
The Knox City Council will meet tonight where more discussion will be held concerning two ordinances.
The tall grass ordinance is expected to be passed on third and final reading. At the last council meeting, the council members agreed to change the height from six to eight inches as the benchmark for needing to mow grass or rank vegetation. The other change the council members approved was an additional penalty. The current ordinance has a fine of $25 for any person who violates the ordinance. The members approved an increase to $75 for the violation.

Goshen Resident Arrested After Friday Night Traffic Stop
A Goshen resident faces numerous charges in Marshall County after a traffic stop and subsequent arrest late Friday night. An officer from the Marshall County Police Department tried to stop a car at the intersection of Michigan and 4A Roads, according to a police department news release. Continue reading
LaPorte Police Respond to Report of Unsupervised Child
LaPorte Police responded Saturday afternoon to a home in the 100 block of Whispering Boulevard when the homeowner found an unattended 4-year-old boy trying to get into her swimming pool. She told police she saw the boy climb her privacy fence and intercepted him before he got into the water. He could not tell the officers where he lived, according to a news release. Continue reading

Starke County Commissioners Weighing Beach Options
The Starke County Commissioners will have some pointed questions for Bass Lake Beach and Campground Manager Richard Callahan and his attorney, David Wallsmith, when they meet tonight. They attend the evening meetings each month and give a management report. Pulaski County Commissioners, Council to Meet in Joint Session Today
The Pulaski County commissioners and county council will meet in a public joint session tonight to discuss the airport operations a little further.
When the Pulaski County council members met last week, several questions were brought up concerning a part-time or full-time position for the airport manager and other issues such as fuel.
Marshall County Commissioners to Meet Today
The Marshall County commissioners will meet this morning at 9:30 a.m. ET where a packed agenda will meet the commission members.
The commissioners plan to make highway appointments and to hear updates from the CASA director, health department, building department and County Attorney James Clevenger.
A public hearing is set for 10 a.m. ET on a zoning ordinance amendment that pertains to sign standards. Anyone wishing to comment on the ordinance may appear at this time.
Oregon-Davis School Board to Discuss Firearms Policy
The Oregon-Davis School Board is working toward the start of school and the members are expected to make several employment and transfer decisions in tonight’s meeting. A recommendation of a non-certified benefit package will also be decided.

West Central Registration Dates Announced
The West Central School Corporation will be opening doors to students soon.
Students can register for classes on Monday, Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET. Textbook rental fees will be due. A $15 technology fee will be added for students receiving a technical device. The rental fee for sixth through twelfth grade will be based on courses taken and will be calculated at the time of registration.
Unemployment Rate Improving
The unemployment rate for Starke County stands at 6.6 percent which ranks the county 27th in the state.
Pulaski County rose .3 percent in June to 5.0, Marshall County was up .2 percent to 5.7 percent with LaPorte County up to 7.5 percent with a .1 percent increase.
INDOT to Close SR 23 for Chip Sealing
Motorists who take State Road 23 through Walkerton will need to find a new route for the next few days. INDOT is closing the road between U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 to perform chip and fog sealing. The process preserves the road surface. INDOT officials stress the work is dependent on dry weather and may be delayed if conditions are not ideal. Southbound motorists can take U.S. 6 south to U.S. 35 and east to U.S. 30 to get around the closure. Northbound motorists can use the opposite route. Continue reading
Chase Elliott Captures Third Win of His Rookie Season
He started out strong and faded back, but came back in winning fashion at Chicagoland Speedway. Chase Elliott was able to claim his third win of the season and gained the points lead Saturday night.
Pole-sitter Brian Scott took over the lead early but Elliott kept up with the top runners starting from the third position. By lap 16, Elliott was on the bumper of Scott. They swapped the lead beginning on lap 21 with Elliott taking the lead and Scott quickly battling back. Elliott was able to keep the lead until lap 51 when a charging Ryan Blaney took over the top spot.

On Saturday afternoon, the ARCA series took to the track at Chicagoland Speedway. In the last lap, Mason Mitchell was able to sneak by Justin Boston for the win. In this Behind the Wheel interview, Mason talks about that last lap and a little about his season.
