Eastern Pulaski School Board Moves Forward With School Safety Concepts

The Eastern Pulaski School Board agreed to move forward with a concept for a school safety grant equipment purchase that will be submitted to the Pulaski County Safety Commission.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman explained that the $50,000 matching grant would be used to fund several equipment upgrades at the buildings. The grant money would be used to upgrade the security camera system to record digital images, to install a keyless entry system for all staff at the elementary school, to install a new box for emergencies that directly notifies EMS, and to devise a mechanism to display emergency plans in all classrooms.

Pulaski County Community Foundation Accepting Grant Applications

  
 
The Pulaski County Community Foundation is gearing up for another grant cycle, this time offering a total of $25,000 to be granted to non-profit organizations benefiting the county. According to Kim Krause, scholarship coordinator and office administrator for the Community Foundation, each recipient can receive no more than $5000.

Krause said the grants are focused toward non-profit organizations, but other organizations can receive the grants as well, through the help of a sponsor.

North Judson Man Arrested Following Standoff

An hour-long standoff between police and a wanted man outside a home in Born’s Trailer Park east of North Judson ended peacefully this afternoon. Detective Kenny Pfost with the Starke County Sheriff’s Office says officers tried to serve warrants on Shannon Watts for probation and parole violations. Pfost adds officers were told there were weapons inside the residence. Watts refused to come out of the trailer, so the officer who initially responded requested assistance from the SWAT team. Pfost says six officers surrounded the trailer while other members staged at the rest park on State Road 10 at county road 250 West. Continue reading

Three Arrested at Koontz Lake Home

 
 

A three-month investigation led to the arrest of three people in Hamlet on Monday.

Officers from the Hamlet Police Department, with the assistance of the Starke County Sheriff’s Department, executed a search warrant at 7733 N. Kickapoo in Walkerton where they found items from multiple burglaries that occurred in Hamlet.

Inspections Results Awaited Regarding Bass Lake Beach and Campground

The Starke County Commissioners are eagerly awaiting the results of the state inspection conducted at the Bass Lake Beach and Campground, and according to Commissioner Kathy Norem, those results should be in before their next commissioners meeting, planned for Monday, Aug. 19. She said the campground had previously been cited for a number of sanitary violations but campground management claims they have corrected those. Since then, a number of other violations sprung up, and those, too, are claimed to have been corrected.

Marshall County Council Approves Add’l Appropriation of $80,000 for Prisoner Meals

  
 
The Marshall County Jail situation is causing the Marshall County Council to plan differently for next year’s budget.

Sheriff Tom Chamberlin was before the council Monday morning to ask for $80,000 in additional appropriations for prisoner meals for the rest of the year. He commented that just over the weekend the jail saw over 200 inmates in the facility which is the most that has been incarcerated at one time since the jail was built in 2006. The bed capacity is 238.

Norfolk Southern Announces Two Starke County Railroad Crossing Closures

 
 
Travelers on county roads 600 East and 200 East, both south of State Road 8 in Starke County, will have to find an alternate route of travel if they need to drive over the railroad crossings. According to highway superintendent Rik Ritzler, both of these crossings will be closed for the duration of this week and are expected to open before Monday, but there are no official detours in place.

North Judson Town-Wide Yard Sale a Success, May Become Annual

 
 
Yard sale enthusiasts flocked to North Judson this past weekend to take advantage of the cornucopia of sales around the town. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said the town was chock-full of cars and visitors searching for good deals at the more than 46 yard sales present on the map provided by the town. Henry said she traveled the area and asked some of the residents holding sales how they felt the day was going, and many responded favorably.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Holds Public Hearing for Superintendent’s Contract

 
 

The Eastern Pulaski School Board members held a public hearing last night during their regularly scheduled meeting concerning the proposed new superintendent’s employment contract.

Board President Mike Tetzloff opened the public hearing for public comment and there was no comment from anyone in the audience. He offered the board members a chance to speak and there was no comment.

Students Gearing Up to Head Back to School This Week

 
 

It’s back to school week throughout the Kankakee Valley and many children are doing their best to enjoy these last few days of freedom from teachers, homework and classes. Registration is behind them, they’ve got their shots and it’s time to begin the new school year.

At Knox Community Schools, students will be heading to the classrooms for their first day back today. Elementary students begin their day at 7:50 a.m. and leave at 2:50 p.m.; middle school students start at 7:35 a.m., leaving at 2:40 p.m.; and high school students begin at 8 a.m. and leave at 2:55 p.m. Students will be dismissed a half-hour early every Friday.

Beach Hazards Statement Issued for LaPorte County

  
 

High wave action and dangerous swimming conditions are likely at beaches in LaPorte County through early tomorrow morning, according to the National Weather Service. Strong rip and structural currents are expected due to north winds of between 15 and 20 miles per hour with occasional gusts topping 25 MPH. Waves are expected to build to between 4 and 7 feet this afternoon and continue through tonight.

 

School Starts This Week; Drive Safely!

 
 
This week marks the start of school for many area children, and with the additional bus traffic on the roads, it is vitally important that drivers be extra cautious and keep a watch out for children who may be in or near the road. According to Brack Rowe, chief deputy at the Starke County Sheriff’s Department, slowing down is the best thing you can do in the early morning or mid-afternoon hours.

“Just be extra cautious,” Rowe said. “Kids are going to be out and about, especially at the beginning of school, some of the kids are going to be anxious, so just slow the driving down and be more cautious about the area, especially if you’re going through a populated neighborhood. Just slow the speed down and be more cautious in your travels.”

Area Firefighters Suit Up for Riley Gear Run

 
 
Several area firefighters are suiting up to raise money for Riley Children’s Hospital. Hunter Sharp with the Koontz Lake Volunteer Fire Department is one of four who are taking part in an upcoming race.

“We’re going to do a 15k run during the Blueberry Stomp Sept. 2. All of our funds go to Riley Children’s Hospital Magic Cart and Palliative Care. The magic cart goes around to each kid at Riley’s once a week, and they get to pick out gifts. Palliative Care is for families of children at Riley’s who unfortunately won’t get to leave Riley. They provide counseling and food and housing for those families,” said Sharp.

Tony Stewart Cancels Northern Indiana Visit

The question and answer and autograph session with Tony Stewart that was scheduled for this Thursday at the Newton Center in Lakeville has been canceled.

Tony Stewart was injured in a sprint car accident on Monday, Aug. 5 that caused two bones to break in his right leg. Two surgeries to help repair the breakage were conducted last week and he is at home now resting comfortably. Due to the nature of his injury, Stewart-Haas Racing officials have announced that Stewart is out of his Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 stock car in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series indefinitely.
