Today is the last chance to vote early before tomorrow’s primary election. For Starke County residents, in-person absentee voting takes place in the County Courthouse in Knox from 8 a.m. until noon. In Pulaski County, voters can cast their ballots today from 9:30 to noon at the Pulaski County Public Library. Starke Commissioners to Continue Courthouse Renovation Talks

starke-county-courthouseThe Starke County Commissioners will continue their discussion of renovation plans for the old jail and courthouse when they meet this evening. Last week officials met with representatives from the Starke County Historical Society to review the plans and get their blessing, since the courthouse is the oldest building in the county. Work is scheduled to start in July and wrap up by the end of the year, according to a previously announced timeline. Continue reading

Blood Drive Scheduled in Honor of WKVI’s Tom Berg

Tom BergCelebrate life and make a difference this Election Day by giving blood. The American Red Cross is hosting a drive tomorrow at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on South Heaton Street in Knox in honor of WKVI morning show host Tom Berg. He was diagnosed last summer with Stage 4 cancer and is on medical leave during his treatment. Tom used to be a faithful blood donor but is no longer able to give due to his medical condition. A local nonprofit organization is doing its part to keep Starke County students from becoming statistics.  Starke County Youth Club Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says nationwide 11.3 million school-aged children are unsupervised after school. Hoosiers Continue to Struggle With Hunger

Donating items like these to food pantries can help bridge the meal gap experienced by many Hoosiers.

The 2016 “Map the Meal Gap” report shows there still too many Hoosiers who go hungry. The annual study by the group Feeding America details food insecurity rates in every county and congressional district in the country. It found 15 percent of Indiana’s population is “food insecure.” Emily Weikert Bryant of Feeding Indiana’s Hungry says that’s over a million people. Continue reading

Knox Considering Recycling Container Change

 
 

Knox residents can weigh in on their choice of recycling container by either contacting city hall or returning the insert included with their water bills. The city council is contemplating a switch from the open totes that are picked up weekly to a 65-gallon wheeled container with a lid. Waste Management would supply them for free and collect recycling every other week. Residents would not incur an additional cost. Continue reading
