Purdue Extension has a new Agricultural Educator in Starke and Pulaski County.
Phil Woolery started the job on May 1st of this year and has, so far, been working to assess exactly what residents in the two counties need out of his services. Purdue Extension offices work to provide educational opportunities in each of Indiana’s counties.

Several families from Indiana were honored by an area state representative last week after keeping agriculture in the family.
State Representative Doug Gutwein congratulated three families on receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. The families received the award from Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann. The program was started in 1976.

Property tax bills are planned to go up for area farmers, but efforts are in the works to temporarily halt the increase once again.
According to Starke County Assessor Rhonda Milner, the Department of Local Government Finance uses a formula each year to determine the agricultural base rate. This is combined with other factors, including the soil productivity factor to determine the taxable value.

The Federal Aviation Administration is scheduled to release proposed regulations for the commercial use of unmanned aircraft systems (U.A.S), commonly referred to as drones. As of right now, the use of drones is limited to hobbyists and a small number of researchers, businesses and government agencies. The new rules are expected to cover altitude limits and license requirements and will open the doors to using drones in a number of new ways.
Since 1980 grain bins across the U.S have been responsible for more than 180 deaths and 675 injuries. Just last year, a Hoosier farmer in La Porte county was killed in a grain bin accident. This month a 9-year-old Wisconsin boy was killed after falling into a grain bin. With harvest time approaching the Indiana Department of Labor wants to remind everyone of the hazardous nature of working with grain bins and offer some tips to assure safety.
Gilsinger Implement, Indiana’s oldest John Deere Dealership, recently purchased Kauffman Sons, Inc., a fourth-generation commercial and lawn and garden dealer. With established locations in Winamac, Knox, Leesburg, and Plymouth, Gilsinger Implement will now operate dealerships in Goshen and Mishawaka.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Food Protection Task Force Conference program has awarded a $10,000 a year grant for the next five years to Indiana to support ongoing efforts to protect the state’s vital food and agriculture infrastructure by focusing on food safety and defense issues.
