The town of North Judson is making progress toward its proposed town maintenance building. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry explained the town board held the public hearing for the structure on Nov. 12 to give the public an opportunity to hear details about the project and ask questions, but no members of the public were present; only a guest from First Farmers Bank and Trust, with whom the town is likely to sign a lease agreement for the building, was present.

Firefighters Respond Quickly to House Fire in North Judson

Firefighters from the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department responded to a house fire Saturday afternoon.

Fire Chief Joe Leszek told WKVI that they were called out at about 12:07 p.m. CT Saturday to 3800 W. Third Street in North Judson. When they arrived at the scene, they found the home’s garage and the home on fire. Leszak said all occupants got out of the home safely and no injuries were reported.

North Judson to Develop Strategic Plan

The town of North Judson may soon have a document to help guide its development for years to come, as Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry told WKVI that the town is working on its strategic plan.

While there have been no specific details released yet about the upcoming plan development, Henry said the town is getting information from the Kankakee-Iroquois Regional Planning Commission and it’s likely that officials will work with KIRPC to develop the document. However, nothing has been finalized.

Henry also noted that utility crews started Monday on the first fall leaf pickup for the community, and they will continue with that this week until they’ve made their rounds of the town. Henry said the town will likely have another round of leaf pickups after the leaves have finished falling.

North Judson Town Board Updated on Salt Shed, Town Garage

The town of North Judson is making some progress in constructing the new salt shed, according to Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry. She said the concrete floor has been poured for the shed, and materials for the building will be delivered on Nov. 27 with construction expected to begin on Dec. 3.

Henry said a public hearing will also be held next Tuesday, Nov. 12, to provide details on the upcoming lease agreement for the soon-to-be-constructed town garage. The hearing has been advertised in the paper, and afterward, Henry said the board will be able to sign the lease agreement.

Hopefully, Henry said, construction of the town garage will begin this year.

Norwayne Field Tree Decorating Event Approaching; Re-Register Now

It’s nearing that time again; the trees at Norwayne Field will soon be decorated for Christmas, and a deadline of Nov. 8 has been set for those who decorated a tree last year and would like to decorate the same tree again this holiday season. Park board member Kay Reimbold told WKVI that this holiday tradition brings the spirit of Christmas to the North Judson community and serves to commemorate those who have been lost.

“What we’ve done for these last probably eight years or so is someone picks a tree at Norwayne Field and they decorate it whatever way they choose to. Most of them are all done in memory of a family member or a friend that has passed away, but they get to pick any style they want. The only thing we require is that they use the outside lights on the tree and they attach things securely so that the wind or the weather doesn’t blow them off,” Reimbold said.

North Judson Schedules Leaf Pick Up

The town of North Judson will begin picking up leaves on Monday. Leaves should be raked into piles and placed along the curb next to the street. Do not put them in the alley, as the truck and machine the town uses to vacuum them up are too wide to get down the alleyways. Also, be sure to separate twigs and branches from your leaf piles.

The North Judson Town Council is beefing up its ordinance regarding unsafe structures. The revised ordinance passed on first reading last week contains appropriate references to Indiana code and spells out the building inspector’s authority to take action when a property is deemed unsafe. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry tells WKVI News the second and third readings of the proposed ordinance will take place at the next town council meeting on Monday, Nov. 4.

North Judson NAPA Soon to Relocate

A prominent auto parts supplier in North Judson will soon be relocating to obtain more space for stock and better serve the community. Joe Elder, manager at the North Judson NAPA, told WKVI that the business plans to move operations to the building that once housed North Judson Foods. He said the reason for the move is to be able to hold more stock, as their current location is getting too small to keep necessary items in stock.
