Saturday Flood Updates for Pulaski County

Much of Pulaski County is still experiencing flooded conditions. Motorists are advised to use caution while driving and to respond accordingly to all posted signage regarding high water and closed roads.

The Pulaski County Highway Department shared yesterday that sandbags can be picked up at the Pulaski County EMA Office (112 E Main St #110 in Winamac) and sand to fill the bags is available at the intersection of 200 W and 50 North in Pulaski County. Continue reading

Motorists Beware! Current Weather Conditions Ideal for Pothole Formation

As the weather continues to fluctuate between warm and cold, it can unfortunately cause ideal conditions for pothole formation.

Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler explained why the damp, dynamic conditions can result in these unwanted road hazards.

Ritzler said, “Potholes generally form from water on the road and it gets into the cracks on the roadway and then as the water turns to ice and it expands and then contracts and that expansion and contraction over time, causes the structure of the pavement to deteriorate.” Continue reading

Pualski County Maintenance Supervisor Seeks More Money for Part-Time Help, Building Repair

2018 may have just started, but some Pulaski County officials are already preparing for shortfalls in this year’s budgets. Maintenance Supervisor Jeff Johnston told the county council last week there isn’t enough money for part-time help. “I guess the numbers were taken off of last year, when I only had two part-time people, and I’ve got four,” he said. “So I’ve only got enough for two of my part-time people. In order to pay them the rest of this year, that additional is $42,360.”

Pulaski County Commissioners to Open Bids for Paving, Lawn Care, Snow Removal, Dump Truck

The Pulaski County Commissioners will open bids for various projects this evening. One of those involves several miles of paving work on County Roads 200 South and 400 East. The commissioners had approved a contract with Central Paving of Logansport for nearly $1.2 million, but they later repealed that decision to allow the project to be bid out formally. Locations of Pulaski County Community Crossings Projects Remain Unclear

Pulaski County is expected to complete over $1 million in road projects with money from the second round of Community Crossings grants. But Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff still hasn’t revealed which roads will be getting an upgrade. He says the work won’t be able to start until the spring, and he wants to wait until closer to that time before releasing details.

Two Major Road Projects Planned by Pulaski County Highway Department

The Pulaski County Highway Department will undertake two major road projects with the funding received through INDOT’s Community Crossings grant. Last week, it was announced that Pulaski County was among the many local communities who were awarded funds through the grant. The Pulaski County Commissioners have approved the replacement of a piece of equipment for the county’s Highway Department. During Monday’s Commissioners meeting, Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff asked for the commissioners’ approval to replace a broken repeater, part of the radio system used to communicate with the department’s trucks. Ten Mile Road Closed Until Further Notice

Road Closed SignKankakee Fish and Wildlife Area officials in North Judson have closed Ten Mile Road in Starke County until further notice due to soggy conditions.
