They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but the Food Finders Mobile Pantry is seeking to change that with their Food Give Away Day on Friday, April 5. The event will take place at Pulaski County Human Services, located at 115 W. Pearl St. in Winamac at 11 a.m., where the Food Finders Food Bank will distribute food on a first-come, first-served basis.
Items to be distributed include frozen meat, beverages, snacks, cereal, vegetables, and baked goods, and the program is available to those who meet 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. For a household of one, monthly income cannot exceed $1723 and annual income cannot exceed $20,665; for a household of two, monthly income cannot exceed $2333 or $27,991 annually; households of three, $2944 monthly or $35,317 annually. For larger households, add $611 per month for each additional household member.
The weather might yet be cold, but you don’t have to be. North Central Community Action Agencies continues to accept applications to help low-income households pay their home heating bills. Any household that has not yet received assistance this heating season should call the agency and request additional information or schedule an appointment.

More than 1,000 people will enjoy a happier holiday season after 45 Pulaski County volunteers distributed food bags, toys and gifts to those in need.
More than 300 households received assistance and more than 700 children were served in this total. Volunteers from Pulaski County Human Services, the Methodist Church in Winamac, Kiwanis members, Winamac High School Sunshine Girls, boys basketball team and Student Council, Winamac Boy Scouts, Head Start, Junior Leaders, and community members spent the day Saturday helping parents shop for toys and wrapped them for distribution.
A donation drive was held to gather toys for the children this year for the Toy Store at the Pulaski County Human Services building in Winamac. Jacki Frain from PCHS thanks all who helped and proved that Pulaski County is working to help bring the community together.
The Coordinated Local Assistance Project, coordinated by Pulaski County Human Services, will soon be distributing the donated items to families in need. Today is the last day the organization will take donations, and tomorrow, the Annual Toy Store food and gift distribution will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pulaski County Human Services building.
Individuals who only registered for a holiday food bag must pick them up by noon today at the PCHS Food Pantry, and families who are being served by ABATE today will receive all of their items at the ABATE party.
The Coordinated Local Assistance Project (CLASP), coordinated by Pulaski County Human Services, continues to collect new toy donations for the Toy Store which will open on Dec. 15. December 14 is the last day to donate toys.
This is the 16th year for this community effort supported by CLASP, and last year, 370 families received food, clothes or toys thanks to the giving spirit of the community.

The Summer Cool Program is being offered through Pulaski County Human Services, Inc. and the North Central Community Action Agencies.
The program provides an additional $65 toward an electric utility for those who signed up for the winter energy assistance program. New applications will be taken by appointment starting July 2. Air conditioners will be available on a first come, first served basis to current and new residents who are eligible. In order to receive this benefit, you must be financially eligible based on the income guidelines of the program, have a person living in your home who is elderly or disabled, or have a child under the age of six.

During the Health and Resource Fair at the Winamac Town Park Community Building, participants can receive free health screenings, information on housing, nutrition, services, finances, volunteering, health education, and employment, as well as in-home and long-term care options. Those are just a few of the topics that will be covered. Over 25 entities have reserved booth space to help address quality of life issues and door prizes will be given.

Pulaski County Human Services Director Jackie Frain recently approached the county commissioners humbly requesting funds to keep the organization afloat. Frain says that another budget cut is on its way in July, and they’re already struggling to stay above water. She said that her oganization has not requested money from the commissioners in eight years because they were previously able to raise funds and receive grants to cover what shortfalls they had, but with the additional budget cut on its way down, she fears the worst.
Although a commodities truck delivery is coming next week, the Pulaski County Human Service’s Food Pantry is in need of items that cannot be purchased with food stamps.
The pantry is in need of personal items, as well as shampoo, toiletries, childrens’ diapers, and laundry detergent, as well as a number of other items. According to Midge Mendiola of the pantry, they are stocked with meats and other food–though the organization has seen an increase in demand due to unemployment and the economy. With rising food prices, Mendiola explained, food stamps are being stretched thin.
The Pulaski County Human Services, Inc. are once again holding their annual Toy Store. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon. Donations of toys, winter gear, food, and other items are greatly appreciated, and may be donated to the Pulaski County Human Services prior to the event. Anyone in need that has registered and qualified will get to “shop” on Saturday for items for their children, and those that have not signed up can still drop by and receive the assistance they need.
The Toy Store provides toys, clothes, food, and other items to people that have signed up for assistance for the holidays. Pulaski County Human Services, Inc. have been holding the food store annually for several years, and they don’t plan on stopping.
Elderly Services Specialist Rosetta Podell told WKVI that there are several different ways people can help out with the organization.
“If you’d like to sponsor a family and buy clothes for them, you can contact us and we’ll get you the agents of the children and their clothes sizes. And we can always use monetary donations for our food baskets as well,” Podell said.
Of course, donations aren’t the only thing the organization needs for the Toy Store. Volunteerism is a necessary thing, and Podell says that anyone interested in volunteering is more than welcome to come by.
“We have several people lined up to come, but the more people that we have the more smooth it goes so anybody that would like to stop by, we’ll put them to work!” she said.
The Energy Assistance Program for LaPorte, Pulaski, and Starke County residents is in full swing, as the North Central Community Action Agencies, Inc. and Community Services of Starke County have begun taking applications.
The Pulaski County Toy Store will be held December 10th from 9:00 a.m. to Noon ET.

The Pulaski County Health Department is teaming up with Pulaski County Human Services to fight hunger this holiday season.
If you bring a non-perishable food item to the Pulaski County Health Department, you will receive $3.00 off for each child administration fee for vaccines now through November 30th. A non-perishable food item is needed for each vaccine the child is receiving to be discounted at the time of your appointment.
The Pulaski County United Fund has partnered with Net Literacy to distribute six refurbished computers to area non-profit agencies.
United Fund agencies, PEAK Community Services, Inc. and Pulaski County Human Services, Inc., will receive three computers each. PEAK will use the computers in group homes located in Winamac. The computers will allow the residents access to job postings and applications. Additionally, residents will be able to gain the skills needed to establish and maintain relationships through the use of email, social networking and internet research. Pulaski County Human Services will place two computers in the Headstart “Resource Room” in Winamac to provide parents with exposure to educational resources. One computer will be placed in the Senior Center, Von Tobel Center. PCHS also plans to offer computer classes.
