SCCF Service Committee Allocates Funds to Preschool Scholarship Program

 
 
The Starke County Preschool Scholarship Program has gotten some monetary support from the Starke County Community Foundation after the SCCF Service Committee voted recently to allocate $10,000 of the foundation’s unrestricted grant dollars to the scholarship program. The program was established with the goal of making one year of preschool education affordable to every child in Starke County.

Starke County Community Foundation Scholarship Reception Held

 
 

The Starke County Community Foundation held a scholarship reception at the Knox Community Center Thursday night where over $27,000 in endowments were given to students.

One of those scholarship recipients is Miranda Ray who will be studying Digital Media and photography at Ball State. She was the winner of the WKVI/Ed Hasnerl Scholarship.  Miranda said her love of digital media in doing projects in school prompted her to pursue it further.

Shakespeare Play to be Presented to Starke County Students

465 Starke County students will be watching a Shakespeare play today at the North Judson-San Pierre High School Auditorium.

For the past several years, the Starke County Community Foundation and the Tri Kappa organizations have awarded grant money in order for the Navy Pier traveling Shakespeare actors to present a production to the students. William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” will take the stage today at noon. This is a way for the students to view a professional Broadway production without having to fund it themselves or leave the county.

Tri Kappa and the Starke County Community Foundation provided over $4,000 toward the event.

Grants Available Through Starke United-Northern Indiana Community Foundation Partnership

Starke UnitedGrant funds are available for charitable organizations that serve the people of Starke County thanks to a partnership between the Starke United Fund and Northern Indiana Community Foundation. The two entities teamed up to make Starke United more cost-effective, and they hope to pass that savings along to deserving local entities. Grant applications can be found online at ncif.org. They are due Monday, April 22. The Starke United Fund Committee will review grant applications and decide which agencies will receive funds. It’s made up of Starke United board members. Community Foundation Scholarship Deadline Nears

 
 
Thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, the Starke County Community Foundation continues its mission in offering more than 20 scholarships every year to high school seniors, college students, and non-traditional students from the Starke County Area. The Foundation invites all qualified students to apply for the scholarships, and urges them to do so in advance of the Foundation’s deadline of March 11. Because many scholarships require essays and letters of recommendation, it is wise to submit applications early.

Starke County Community Foundation Heading Into Fall Grant Cycle

The Starke County Community Foundation is heading into their fall granting cycle, in which the organization has the flexibility of granting funds to a number of different groups and a variety of programs. Director of Development Sarah Origer says the foundation is passionate about helping local organizations and projects that make a difference in Starke County, and now is the ideal time to provide that support.

The program and communications director for the Northern Indiana Community Foundation, Inc., Corinne Becknell, administers the granting program. She says the foundation offers grants to charitable organizations, and it has awarded over $1.7 million in community grants.

Starke County Community Foundation Distributes $30,000 In Scholarships

The Starke County Community Foundation recently distributed $30,000 in scholarships during their annual reception.

Twenty-two scholars received 29 scholarships. Cody Hendershott was named this year’s recipient of the Ed Hasnerl/WKVI Scholarship and received his award during the reception. The 2012 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, Katelyn Schwenk of Oregon-Davis High School, was also recognized.

More than 50 Starke County students applied for the 29 Community Foundation scholarships and 15 students applied for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.

North Judson-San Pierre High School

Approximately 200 youngsters are expected to gather tomorrow at the North Judson-San Pierre Elementary School for the 17th Annual Young Artists Conference sponsored by Psi Iota Xi Sorority, the Starke County Fine Arts Commission, and the Starke County Community Foundation.

Marilyn Lucac is one of the organizers who helps arrange for talented presenters to come to the event.   She explained how many authors would be in attendance.

“We have four published authors.  A few of them will have their books for sale, and will autograph them,” said Lucac.

The Sief brothers will be back again.  The pair were favorites in the past.

”I have a set of twins, Adam and Jeremy Seif, coming.  Adam has a book, ‘All About Spencer.’ I have an order form for the book if any of the children wants one.  Last year he brought books, and ran out,” Lucac said.

This is the Seventeenth Young Artists Conference.  There is a $5 registration fee which includes lunch.  No child is turned away, they can register at the door.

The conference is for children first grade through the fifth, and registration is between 8:30 and 9 a.m. CT tomorrow.

Starke County Community Foundation Scholarships Available

The Starke County Community Foundation is announcing three new scholarship opportunities for high school seniors. Added this year are the Altman Family Scholarship for students at North Judson-San Pierre High School, the James and Carris Lucas Scholarship for Knox High School students, and the Physicians Hospital System Visionary Scholarship which will provide one scholarship for a Starke County student and also one for a Marshall County student.

Starke County Food Pantry Receives Generous Donation

The Starke County Food Pantry received a $3,500 check from the Starke County General Unrestricted Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation for the purpose of purchasing meat and food for the food pantry.

Cecilia Torres, Services Coordinator, says that several more donations have come into the food pantry, but more is always welcome. You may drop off your donation at the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Jessica Jachim is the Recipient of This Year’s Lilly Endowment Scholarship

A North Judson-San Pierre High School student has been named the recipient of a full four year scholarship as the Starke County Community Foundation 2011 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. Jessica Jachim will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of her choice and an $800 yearly stipend for required books and equipment. Jessica is the daughter of Michael and Sherri Jachim and she plans to study English Literature or Journalism.

She is a member of the National Honor Society and is President of SADD. A representative of Hoosier Girls State, Jessica has shown her leadership skills in community and church fund raising activities and on the field as a four year member of the Blue Jay Girls Softball team.

Starke County Community Foundation Awards Grants

The Starke County Community Foundation made the holiday bright for many community organizations during its 2010 Grant Award Banquet. Over $24,000 was awarded on Monday, December 6th at the Community Center in Knox.

The grants are part of the Community Foundation’s Unrestricted Funds which allow the Community Foundation to assess the greatest needs of the community and assist the individual agency programs. Since 1998, the Community Foundation has awarded over $1.7 million to local organizations and projects that make a difference in Starke County.
