Winamac Town Council members were alerted of a major change that will be taking place with the collection of fireworks display donations when they met Monday night.
Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger provided members with a letter from Scott Roudebush where he announced that he will no longer be soliciting donations for the town’s fireworks display. Continue reading
The Winamac Town Council members met for an executive session and a special meeting on Monday in order to consider and vote on a few different matters related to the Winamac Police Department.
At the last Winamac Town Council meeting, Town Marshal Mike Buchanan officially announced his retirement, which will take effect on July 1st. As a result of his announcement, council members met to consider who will serve as his replacement.
There were two current Winamac police officers who were interested in the position; First Sergeant Mark Hoffman and Deputy Marshal Brian Gaillard. Continue reading
Winamac Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger informed town council members last week that the Department of Local Government Finance approved the budget submitted for 2018.
Berger stated that aside from the budget being approved, she also learned that the maximum tax levy was received. She added that Eric Walsh from Umbaugh and Associates collected some information from her and said they will be meeting with Pulaski County officials to discuss the LIT levy freeze issue.
Additionally, Berger asked members for permission to enter all checks that are unaccounted for back into the system. Continue reading
Winamac Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger proposed updating the town’s ordinance book during the town council meeting Monday night.
Berger explained that American Legal Publishing is the company that takes care of updating their code of ordinances book. She informed the council members that the last update cost around $3,000 and took place back in July of 2016.
Since about 18 months has passed, she asked council members if they’d like to update the book again. Continue reading

Winamac Town Council members reviewed an ordinance detailing the EDIT Plan for 2018 and 2019 when they met this week.
Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger explained that the EDIT Plan outlines proposed projects that will utilize county economic development income tax funds for the next two years.
Town Attorney Justin Schramm added that State Code requires towns to spend 75% of what they receive. He said the figures provided for 2019 were estimated since they do not currently know how much Winamac will receive that year. Schramm said for the 2019 amount, he reduced next year’s amount by 20 percent to present conservative figures just in case they receive less. Continue reading
A public hearing will be held over adjustments to water rates in Winamac prior to the regularly scheduled town council meeting tonight. The council’s regular session will commence immediately following the public hearing which is set for 6 p.m. ET.
During the clerk-treasurer’s report, the council will hold the second reading over the water rate ordinance. Adjustments to the water rates are being proposed in order to help cover costs for the town’s water project. Continue reading
The Winamac Pool Committee continues to raise money for the town’s swimming pool rebuilding project, but confusion remains about how exactly the project will proceed. A fish fry fundraiser is taking place this evening from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Winamac VFW. The need for private fundraising has increased in recent weeks, after the Town of Winamac pulled its official support.
A computer error and change to a particular billing procedure led to Dave Bennett of Bennett Insurance & Reality being owed a reimbursement from the Town of Winamac. On Wednesday, the Winamac Town Council reviewed the charges and acted on the refund.

Pulaski County communities are facing budget deficits, due to a shortfall in local income tax revenues. The issue was brought to the attention of the county council Monday, after Winamac Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger noticed a decline in the town’s share of Local Levy Freeze Income Tax funds.
The removal of dying ash trees continues to be a concern for the Winamac Park Board, as it puts together its 2018 budget. Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo estimates about 75 ash trees remain at the town park. He told the park board Monday that about six of those will soon have to be cut down by a contractor. Many of those are in danger of falling on shelters.
Restroom upgrades, ADA-compliant playground equipment, and the renovation of the swinging bridge are all on the Winamac Park Board’s radar for the coming years. But declining tax revenues have board members looking at some creative funding solutions. Continue reading
