Five Arrested in Winamac Meth Lab Bust
Five people were arrested Saturday, Jan. 24 after Winamac police received a complaint of high traffic and a smell at one of the Franklin Street apartment complex around 11:30 p.m. ET.
A search warrant was obtained for 214 S. Franklin Apt. B. and where an active meth lab was allegedly found along with marijuana, prescription medication, packaging materials, meth, and syringes, according to Winamac officer Mark Hoffman.
Winamac Man Arrested on Drug Possession Charges
A Winamac man was arrested early Sunday morning after he was reportedly found in possession of methamphetamine.
A Winamac police officer saw a red vehicle in the parking lot by the Pulaski County Public Library with the driver present. The officer knew that vandalism was occurring to a structure by the library so he approached the car.
Infant Death Under Investigation
Winamac Police Department detectives and officials with the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office are investigating the death of a two-month-old boy.
Winamac Police Chief Michael Buchanan told WKVI News that the infant died Tuesday morning at a home in the 400 block of Main Street in Winamac. The child had previous medical issues and no foul play is suspected at this time.
Winamac Man Arrested on Georgia Warrant
A Winamac man was arrested early Friday morning on a Georgia state warrant for rape.
The Winamac Police Department took 21-year-old Jeffery Mack into custody on the charge. He is being held without bond in the Pulaski County Jail.
The information into the nature of the alleged offense was not made immediately available.
Winamac Council Approves Police Car Purchase
The Winamac Police Department plans to add another Dodge Charger to its fleet.
Chief Mike Buchanan told the town council the car will replace a 2008 Chevrolet Impala. He adds the Charger offers the best value for the money. He has $25,000 in his budget to purchase a new car. The Winamac Police Department qualifies for the state’s negotiated law enforcement fleet price but will still be able to take delivery of the car through Braun Chrysler in Winamac.
Officers Bust Winamac Meth Lab, Two Arrested
A Winamac man who reportedly tried to flee from police Friday to avoid being arrested for making meth faces numerous drug charges after jail officers reportedly found more contraband in his pants. Officers from the Winamac Police Department and Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office got a tip about drug activity and responded at 7:34 p.m. on Friday, May 9 to an apartment in the 400 block of West Main Street in Winamac. A deputy reportedly spotted David Wayne Gentry, 29, walking behind the apartment building and ordered him to stop. Gentry ran, according to the police report, and was apprehended after a brief foot chase. Both Gentry and his girlfriend, Shannon Lee Hardin, 30, were arrested after deputies reportedly found an active meth lab and other precursors inside the home. Continue reading

A Winamac woman is alive this morning thanks to the quick response from a Winamac Police Officer on patrol. Mark Hoffman was southbound on U.S. 35 just before midnight last night and saw a vehicle on fire near County Road 50 East. Hoffman called the Pulaski County Dispatch Center and requested fire and EMS assistance and approached the SUV, where he saw an unconscious woman inside. Continue reading

A Winamac man who reportedly tried to hide in a closet in order to avoid a trip to jail is behind bars on a $35,000 bond. An officer from the Winamac Police Department responded to a tip that Keith L. Campbell, 44, of Winamac, was at an apartment on Franklin Street last night. Attorneys Meet in Case Involving Former Winamac Police Officer
The former Winamac Police Department officer had pleaded not guilty to a charge of Theft as a Class D felony in an earlier court hearing. He allegedly admitted to Winamac Police Chief Michael Buchanan that he took $6,352 from an evidence locker at the police department on Feb. 25, but he returned the money on April 6. Hartley reportedly told Chief Buchanan that he took the money to help pay for a dental procedure for his mother.
The money was being held in an evidence locker during an investigation into a fatal accident involving Jamie Sheets.
Hartley has since resigned from his position at the police department.
Winamac PD Hires New Officer, Prepares To Interview Applicants
A former Winamac Police Chief has has rejoined the department as a patrol officer. Chief Mike Buchanan says Jeff Heims started June 1. He replaces Daymond Hartley, who resigned amid a controversy over money he reportedly admitted taking from a department evidence locker and is facing criminal charges. Buchanan says Heims is currently working the swing shift to cover for other members of the department when they have days off. The town’s salary ordinance provides a bump in pay of $550 for each five years of seniority, but Buchanan says the town council’s approval is still needed.
