Winamac Park Board Finalizes 2019 Budget Proposal

The Winamac Park Board is asking for a slight increase in its Park budget. Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger reviewed the 2019 budget proposal during last week’s board meeting. She explained that it’s about $900 larger than this year’s budget. Berger said the park board has been doing a good job of staying within its budget, and if spending and revenue projections hold true, the park board can expect to increase its cash reserves by almost $15,000 by the end of 2019.

Winamac Town Council Considers New Insurance Agency

Winamac Town Council members considered a change to the town’s insurance agent when members met in a special meeting Monday night.

The town’s current provider is Budd Insurance Agency. They offer the town liability and property insurance for $57,291 and workers’ compensation for $16,271 for a total charge of $73,562. The town received a counteroffer from ONI Risk Partners. Representative Alex Dickman noted that they could broaden the services for the town while simultaneously providing them at a lower cost. Need for More Firefighters Addressed at Winamac Town Council’s Special Session

One of the first matters brought up when the Winamac Town Council held a special meeting with members of the Fire Department on Monday was the need for more firefighters.

Fire Chief Bill Weaver stated there are 16 members on the roster right now but two are inactive. He added that they’re looking at some prospective candidates currently. He explained that they’ve posted about the need for more members but haven’t had much luck getting people interested in serving. Continue reading

Winamac Water Department Superintendent Discusses Wellhead Protection with Town Council

A quote for a wellhead protection plan was presented to Winamac Town Council members when they met on Monday.

Water Department Superintendent Jeremy Beckner told members that the quote was from Peerless Midwest and it was for $26,250.

He explained that a wellhead protection plan is something that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management requires. Continue reading

Winamac Town Council Amends Holiday Schedule for Town Employees

Some changes were made to the holiday schedule for town employees at Monday night’s Winamac Town Council meeting.

Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger explained that typically, town employees work half days on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. However, since Christmas falls on a Tuesday this year, Berger asked the council to consider giving employees the whole day off on Monday, December 24th in exchange for working a full day on Monday, December 31st. Winamac Town Council Revisits Request to Amend Golf Cart Policy

A request to amend the Winamac golf cart policy was revisited by Town Council members when they met Monday night.

Council President Tom Murray noted that when resident Tony Calabrese came before the members during their first meeting in July, they said they would take his recommendation under consideration. Calabrese asked the council to consider adding utility vehicles, such as “Kubotas”, to the vehicles allowed on town roads.

Since they haven’t met since then, President Murray said they should discuss it during the special session to reach a consensus before their next official meeting. Continue reading

Winamac Town Council Approves Quote for Electrical Rebuild Project to the East of Town

Winamac Town Council members were informed about quotes that received for an electrical rebuild project to the east of town when they met Monday night.

Electric Department Superintendent Doug Shorter explained that the rebuild is needed to help power the new wells. He said the upgrades will entail installing new poles and running some wire.

Town Manager Brad Zellers told the council members that three quotes were submitted for the project and they ranged from $75,000 to about $275,000. Continue reading

Winamac Town Council Asked to Consider Amending Golf Cart Ordinance

A Winamac resident came before the Town Council Monday night, to request an amendment to the Town’s golf cart ordinance.

Tony Calabrese mentioned that Pulaski County’s ordinance allows utility vehicles on the roads for business use. He asked the council members if they would consider making a change to the Town’s existing ordinance to allow for the use of UTVs. Continue reading

Winamac Town Marshall Mark Hoffman Addresses Recent Projects at the Department

Winamac Town Marshal Mark Hoffman has been quite busy since he took over for Mike Buchanan, whose retirement officially went into effect on July 1st.

Hoffman has been shadowing Buchanan over the last few months since his retirement was announced in February. Marshal Hoffman told town council members on Monday that there were a few projects that he wanted to get taken care of that have been completed. Continue reading
