Crews battled an early morning structure fire near Medaryville on Saturday that authorities believe resulted from an explosion.
A call notifying emergency responders of the situation came in at 7:14 a.m. EDT. Firefighters responded to the area of 1600 West and 2505 North in Pulaski County within minutes. That area is just Northwest of Medaryville.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Pulaski County Sheriff Jeff Richwine has confirmed a body was discovered in the debris. Following the explosion, much of the structure of the home collapsed into the basement. Authorities are working to properly identify the victim with an autopsy scheduled for Monday, May 18th in Lafayette, Indiana.
Medaryville, San Pierre, and Francesville Fire Departments were able to get the flames under control within an hour, but were working to extinguish the remaining hot spots in the rubble for several more hours. The Pulaski County Coroner pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Damage to neighboring structures was not reported in the incident, though damage was incurred to two vehicles on site.
