LaPorte County Sheriff, Michael Mollenhauer, announced Wednesday that the scabies infestation at the LaPorte County Jail has been totally eradicated.
With the exception of one inmate, who is not cooperating with the decontamination treatments, all inmates have been released from isolation. The uncooperative inmate will continue to be held in isolation to prevent re-infestation. Sheriff Mollenhauer stated in a news release that police may need to pursue getting a court order to treat the inmate if the condition becomes a threat to the rest of the jail. Sheriff Mollenhauer also noted that the extent of the scabies outbreak was very unusual. The jail staff is normally able to treat an individual with this medical condition, but this outbreak got out of control.
As of Wednesday, jail operations returned to normal.
