Darienne Griffith, a student at Knox Community High School, and Jennifer Atkinson of North Judson-San Pierre High School, were two of a select group of students who attended the 12th Anniversary Molecular Medicine in Action program at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
This year, 50 of Indiana’s best high school science students were selected from 220 applicants for the two day program that involved working alongside top research scientists learning hands-on laboratory techniques used in modern biomedical research.
Darienne, Jennifer and the other students in this year’s program isolated DNA in test tubes, stained chromosomes in order to identify mutations, learned about issues in bioethics, and practiced techniques for inserting genes into cells, among other activities.
