On Thursday, June 2nd, there will be a party of sorts at the Monterey Elementary School. Patrons are invited to the school from 5:00-7:00 p.m. ET to watch a slide show, tour of the building and exchange of stories from a by-gone era.
June 2nd is the last day of classes for students and there will undoubtedly be sadness, and possibly even a few tears shed upon seeing the doors closed on the building that opened in 1934.
Many of those in attendance June 2nd will remember that it was 50 years ago that the Monterey Fliers High School basketball team won the Winamac Sectional.
In 1968, Monterey was consolidated into the Culver Community Schools. The school was then turned into a stand alone elementary school. That year was the end of Monterey High School. A two million dollar renovation of the school was approved in 2000.
But in the end, the fate was sealed by an over $800,000 funding deficit announced earlier this year for the corporation.
