Starke County experienced a significant jump in unemployment in January, according to the most recent figures. Starke County’s percentage jumped from 10.5% in December to 11.7% in January. That placed the county in a tie for fifth place with Blackford County on the highest unemployment rates in the state.
Vermillion County had the highest rate at 12.3%.
Other rates in our immediate area include: Pulaski County at 7.5%, Marshall County at 10.2%, LaPorte County 11.1%, Fulton County 10.0%, St. Joseph County at 10.3%, and Porter County at 8.4%.
86 of the 92 counties were up from December of 2011, three were down, and three were unchanged.
Indiana’s rate was down from December at 8.7%, Michigan came in at 9.0%, Illinois at 9.4%, Ohio at 7.7%, and Kentucky at 8.8%.
Dubois and Davies had the lowest rates in the state at 6.0%.
