The La Porte Hospital Foundation, on behalf of IU Health Starke Hospital and the Starke Health Fund, was awarded a $3900 grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust.
Through funding from the trust, the La Porte Hospital Foundation Breast Cancer Project will assist low-income, uninsured women older than 40 and women at any age who are at high risk for breast cancer to receive screening mammograms through a physician’s referral.
This project is a comprehensive effort aimed at early detection of breast cancer in local communities. The Foundation seeks funding partners to support community-wide efforts of IU Health Starke Hospital related to breast health education, clinical breast exams, and mammograms to assist in the early detection of breast cancer.
Individuals should contact their physician’s office or the Imaging Department at IU Health Starke Hospital at (574) 772-1143 to see if they qualify for a free screening mammogram voucher.
The Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust funds the grant through the sale of the state’s breast cancer awareness license plates. Since the plate was first made available in 2002, more than $1.1 million has been distributed by the IBCAT through competitively awarded grants to organizations throughout the state for innovative projects for screening mammography services not otherwise available to medically under-served populations in Indiana.
