Those involved in the Starke County Relay for Life event have already been busy fundraising and gathering ideas to make this year’s event the best yet.
Megan Hamand, promotions chair for the Starke County Relay for Life, announced that this year’s event will be Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, at the Starke County Fairgrounds in Hamlet. The soft-opening is at 3 p.m. CT and the opening ceremonies are set for 6 p.m. CT.
She said this year’s theme is, “Colors of Cancer.”
“Each team is going to pick a different cancer to represent in a different ribbon color,” explained Hamand. “Not only is it going to be a lot of fun with all of these crazy colors, but very, very informative. You’ll be able to get a lot of information about the different types of cancers, treatments and prevention.”
Among the many fundraisers teams are working on, Hamand is really excited about the Relay for Life Pageant.
“Demotte State Bank’s Relay team is putting this on. It’s going to be April 21 at 2 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in the Family Life Center and there are ages anywhere from one to 18 split up into different age groups. You have to be a Starke County resident. Winners in each class will be in the little Relay for Life parade at the event,” Hamand said.
A team meeting to help get more organized for this year’s Relay is this Thursday.
“At 6 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, we will have our planning committee meeting for promotions and for the chairpersons – that type of thing. Anyone can come to that, especially if they’re interested in getting on board to plan the event. At 7 p.m., we bring in our team captains and our team members and give them all of the information that they need to get their teams up and running,” Hamand explained.
