A local organization seeking to provide financial aid to other non-profit organizations in Starke County is planning a fundraising dance in just over a week. Starke United will be hosting the “Back to the Future with Starke United” event, which will feature a variety of foods, dancing, a cash bar, and live music at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox.
Live music will be provided by Category 5, food from a variety of decades – 50s, 60s, and 70s – will be provided, and attendees are encouraged to dress casually in the style of their favorite era. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. on March 9, while dinner starts at 7 p.m. with dancing immediately afterward from 8 to 11 p.m.
Janice Hernandez, coordinator of the event, told WKVI that the event will help to raise some money to help a number of local organizations, all of which are local to Starke County.
“Any money that is raised through Starke United stays in Starke County; all the money raised at this event and any event that we do stays totally in Starke County and is distributed to the non-profit organizations like CADA, CASA, the food pantry, the backpack program – all of the money that is raised stays in Starke County. We divvy it out to the other organizations as needed,” said Hernandez.
Hernandez said Starke United is making a big push right now to help the food pantry, and said they will be trying to raise as much money as possible for the pantry throughout the night. She said this is the first time they’ve held an event of this kind; usually, she said, the organization hosts a kick-off breakfast, but this is the first time they’ve held a dinner for the dance and they plan to do it annually.
She said she challenges everyone in the community to step up and attend the event in support of local non-profits that go above and beyond to care for those in need of help.
“I challenge everybody to give back to our community, I really do. I’d like to put the challenge out there to challenge people to give back to their own community, because the organizations are not going to survive unless we give back to them,” Hernandez said.
