Pulaski County Commissioners plan to ratify the terminations of two employees during their meeting tonight. Questions have been raised about whether they committed a violation of the open meetings law last Monday when they terminated highway department manager Kenny Becker and maintenance supervisor Morry DeMarco during an executive session.
County attorney Kevin Tankersley contends Becker was fired by commissioner Larry Brady in his role as acting county highway superintendent. He also says final action on the terminations will be taken during tonight’s meeting. Becker has since filed a notice of tort claim against the commissioners seeking $500,000 in damages.
The 6 p.m. session at the Pulaski County Courthouse is expected to draw a capacity crowd of outraged Becker supporters. They’ve attended every meeting since receiving word of his Jan. 22 suspension with pay demanding answers from the commissioners as to what prompted Becker’s suspension, demotion to highway manager and subsequent termination.
