The Town of Winamac has once again been honored as a Tree City USA by the Department of Natural Resources.
It’s one of 65 Indiana communities honored this year for environmental stewardship. Winamac has made the list each year since 1999. In order to achieve Tree City USA honors, a community must have a tree committee, a tree ordinance, a community forestry program and an Arbor Day recognition.
Winamac Town Manager Jim Conner says volunteers with Greenspace Winamac have planted close to 1,000 trees since their committee was formed. All of the trees have been paid for with grant money and planted by volunteers, so the town’s cost has been minimal.
Last year Greenspace Winamac took on the redevelopment of the lot at the southeast corner of Monticello and Washington Streets and turned it into a pocket park. Conner says that project is essentially complete save for the planting of a few flowers there to give it some color.
