A LaPorte man who tipped over in his kayak and went into the Tippecanoe River near Winamac was rescued Tuesday.
Walt Krzyzak, 65, and his wife were kayaking near the Tippecanoe River State Park when his kayak hit an obstruction in the river and flipped over. Krzyzak was thrown into the river and was able to hang onto a nearby snag until help could arrive.
Krzyzak cried for help and Tippecanoe River State Park personnel were notified. Indiana Conservation Officer Jeff Richwine responded to the scene in his patrol boat and with the assistance from Mike Manion from the State Park they were able to quickly remove Krzyzak from the river.
Krzyzak was not harmed but Richwine noted that Krzyzak wasn’t wearing a life jacket when the incident occurred and the emergency situation could have been avoided had he worn a life jacket.
