A LaPorte man was arrested Tuesday after a brief vehicle pursuit with police in downtown LaPorte.
LaPorte officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by 23-year-old Stephen Murphy as he nearly collided head-on with a marked police vehicle by going the wrong way on a one-way street.
When the officer initiated the traffic stop, Murphy’s car accelerated and led police on a pursuit that went through the downtown area. Murphy disregarded several stop lights along the pursuit.
When Murphy approached the intersection of Fox Street and A Street, he jumped out of the car and started running. Police followed on foot and quickly took Murphy into custody.
A woman in the car was released at the scene.
Murphy was arrested on preliminary charges of Resisting Law Enforcement as both a Class D felony and Class A misdemeanor, plus a misdemeanor charge of Reckless Driving.
