The LaPorte City Police Department and the Starke County Traffic Safety Partnership recently wrapped up the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
Officers from the Knox, North Judson and Hamlet Police Departments, plus the Starke County Sheriff’s Department wrote 63 citations, arrested six on Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated charges, and made eight other criminal arrests. Coordinator Dave Combs from the Knox City Police Department noted that officers worked 136 hours in extra patrols to keep the roadways safe from impaired drivers.
LaPorte officers reported that three impaired driving arrests were made, 39 citations were given and 135 warnings were issued in 11 impaired driving patrols.
Captain Tom Heath said there were no motorcycle or moped crashes and only one alcohol related crash which was a property damage only accident.
The state-wide campaign ran from Aug. 16 through Sept. 2. Ten thousand law enforcement agencies nation-wide participated in the campaign spearheaded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
