It’s where the love of racing begins for most drivers and fans: the short track.
NASCAR’s David Stremme will be at the Double Tree Inn in South Bend, Indiana on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. ET where he will meet with short track drivers, owners, workers, and more to help improve the sport at a local level.
“Things just change and adjusting to them is the biggest thing,” said Stremme. “As humans, we want things faster. There’s more technology now so there’s a lot more things for us to do. We’re going to see what everybody can do from racers to owners to sponsors to fans. We’re going to have a lot of different people there so we’ll see what we can get out of it.”
Stremme noted that short track racing is still huge in the Midwest and the numbers are there to prove it. Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana is one of the area tracks that brings in a crowd of dedicated fans. The track turned to dirt last season which was rough to start out with, but has shown great improvement.
“I’ve talked to friends who have been racing there toward the end of last year and they [track staff] really got their hands around the preparation of the dirt. They’ve really made a lot of gain there and they have a little ways to go and they know that. I definitely think they’re going in the right direction,” commented Stremme.
David Stremme, a South Bend, Indiana native, hopes to come back to the track in 2014 and claim a UMP Modified feature win. He joined other NASCAR drivers Ken Schrader, Kenny Wallace, David Reutimann, and Justin Allgaier at Plymouth Speedway in June of 2013.
